    Same here Freddy....but i've got a bit of a problem....still need a home for 4 Stonors and My grafted Beefmaster...run out of space:doh: they look quite stressed but not as stressed as me i bet:biggrin:

      Haven't been on the site for quite a while. Just found this thread and would like to add my list of tomatoes.
      I'm growing Sakura, John Hawkins, Sweet Olive, Vanessa, Lilac, Costoluto Fiorentino, Apero, Black Russian and Sungold. Hope I'm not too late!

              Hello chums.

              This year, as with every year, my tomatoes have turned leggy:doh:So, I was thinking, what would happen if I were to cut off the main stem and just allow one side-shoot from the bottom set of leaves? Anyone ever tried this? Anyway, as I have a few spare, I've taken off the main stem on one of my Sungold.

                  I have done it the other way about, last year I snapped a Shirley F1 Cordon half way up
                  I stripped two sets of leaves off the bottom of the remaining top bit and stuck it in the GH Border
                  It was fine (I had not a clue what I was doing or what would happen just tried it)

                      It will work Freddy, it's a technique that commercial growers used to use years ago, maybe some still do. They encouraged two side shoots, so there are two growing points, double the space is needed but the idea was it saved a little on seed.

                      Another technique for really early tomatoes was to keep the main growing tip as normal and to allow the first side shoot to grow then nip it out above the first truss. The idea was the first tomatoes were more valuable earlier in the season.

                          I've read of people who accidentally snapped the growing stem off a tomato and reported that the side shoot that they let grow in its stead was not as productive as the other plants they had growing alongside.

                          Bit of a small sample though ...

                          Plant it on its side and train the top upwards perhaps? First Truss "right down on the deck"? :)
