I planted mine about 1/2 inch deeper than they were in the pot, according to the Johnsons Growing Information:

"Plant out into your onion bed late in April to early May, approximately 40cm x 45cm (15” x 18”) apart. Water each plant well before planting out; this ensures that the root ball will easily slide out of the pot. Dig each hole deep enough to allow enough to allow the roots to spread easily.

Bury the white of the plant approximately 13-20mm (½” - ¾”) deep, firming well. Do not over firm, and do not water unless it is absolutely necessary, but make sure the soil is moist."

      Hiya folks.

I'm not sure how mine are going to go. Although the leaves have all flopped over and the bulbs are still swelling, new leaf growth looks quite healthy....

      Hiya John.

No, and they seem quite strong, so I guess there is some hope?

The new leaves on mine look pretty strong but they are still looking like chunky spring onions:dunno:

Oh yes Freddy there is hope :) The older leaves on mine have flopped over, I think they get too big to support themselves, even with my support system they break.

Same here, I reckon that right now plants are putting down their root system and growing new leaves getting prepared for some serious growing in the next month or two.

John, it looks quite possible that there might be a frost this week. Are you going to take any precautions?

I've only been worrying about the really tender stuff in the greenhouse, toms and cucumbers, cannas, begonias etc. I can't think of much to do for the onions, except a some fleece over them? What are you going to do Freddy?

Don't think it'll bother them too much, they have antifreeze for blood. Bit like an Austrian labourer that used to work for me.

I covered mine with fleece tonight, then we had hail and heavy rain so I've gone back outside and uncovered them, the fleece had got soaking wet and was doing more harm than good.
