Sorry to hear about your job Sal :grphg:

You are spot on about the lack of spending though - it bewilders me why any government would rather pay benefits for people to be out of work rather than investing money in building infrastructure like water purification, drainage, power stations etc which would give people jobs, and in turn would see those employed people paying taxes :dunno:

I understand the argument that we are all but bankrupt, but we are still 'trading' - surely there is an argument for some sort of fiscal stimulus that centres around going back to the absolute basics - building homes, water and drainage, schools and medical facilities, power stations, roads......

OK, I know they can't build it all at once, but it surely HAS to be worth borrowing a shed load of money to kick start things, and then it would slowly become self-financing?

Could do with the rain here. We've had no significant rain for weeks and my soil is turning to dust.

that`s the problem on the first place , the water in Uk is private and the government has no power to stop them at all ......no one can live without water.
I worked out that I pay more in water then gas ......it shouldn`t be like that .
not talking that a bottle of water cost more then a litre of petrol .....

Its crazy isn't it? I seem to recall that the 'deal' with taxes was that it was to pay for things like water, sanitation and public infrastructure such as roads, railways and public transport - at one time that also included telecomms (remember the GPO?) and even non-profit gas and electricity.

Given that our gas, water, electric, telecomms and public transport are profit-making industries, where the hell is all of our tax money going now?

Global warming is what it says on the tin, global. However unfortunately, in history, whenever the world has gone into a warming event, NW Europe has gone into a nice cooling event.. and this is what's happening now. The world is warming nicely in general, unfortunately.. we're not part of it! For us the worst part is, because the entire globe is either warming, or maintaining a warm 'flatline', we get concentrated cold as the Earth's system is forced to re-balance things.. global warming, local cooling.. !

In the past when the world has warmed we do eventually join in the party, but it takes a little longer for us and while the ice caps melt, we get pretty cold.

Still I'd rather be in another part of the world right now!

Hailstone here today too, and another glorious dummy spit from me at work, which made my colleagues laugh.

Today, while sat at my desk in the silence of an office full of people in deep concentration, I promptly declared, 'right, that's it, I hate this stupid pointless country, I'm moving to a better one'. Then having realised I now had the undivided attention of my colleagues, I felt compelled to explain that only yesterday I'd planted out some young plants, and now they hail has probably battered them down.

My take on that is that that is normally the case. People spend in the good times, and tighten their belts in the bad times; Government spend in the bad times, to stimulate the economy, and save in the good times. Trouble is that the government spent massively during the last good-times ... so coffers are dry now that we are in the bad times. Gordon Brown's "Recessions are a thing of the past" or whatever similar garbage he said, was an incredibly irresponsible line of thought. Also the damage that the bankers have done is astronomic compared to past recessions :( More akin to what a world war costs, financially, and will take a generation to pay off (although I have no idea where the money comes from that is then needing to be paid back "for a generation")

Apart from immediately after the war, when lots of industries were nationalised as there wasn't the private money to kickstart them, those industries should have been break-even at worst, revenue-raising at best, so should have been no need for tax payers to subsidise them (otherwise they would never have been an enticing proposition for privatisation :) )

[Obviously there were times when infrastructure investment was needed, and made, just like businesses in private ownership, but in general they should not have needed to be subsidised ... but Nationalisation is a race to the bottom in terms of productivity, now replaced with a race to the bottom in terms of financial greed :( ]

                        "Brussels" is one answer :(

The amount that goes into Welfare is horrific and someone has to find a solution to that.

Other than that Education, Healthcare, Law and Order and Defence. And Whitehall Gravy Train.
