How did you find us ?

I've already introduced myself but I found the site when I Googled "gardening forums". I looked at a couple but thought this was the best and the most friendly. I also like the way it's easy to use and to be honest it looks good too.

 

I googled a question re polytunnels you came up on first page - and the posting was the most helpful I found.

 

I searched Garden Forum in google you were the 4th link down.

Thanks Mum, I'm brand new to gardening, my photo is the state of it currently.

 

Oooh, goodie, a photo! (That'll make our Jenny very happy. She does like to see photo's and progressions ) A picture really does paint a thousand words!

We were all beginners once, so no worries. I only really started last year myself I've just popped inside now after stage 2 of a new bed. Dug it all over a couple of weeks ago, pulled out any weeds/roots visible and now just dug in some compost (just in time as its about to bucket down!)

Don't be shy in asking questions. Also, have a try of the search facility too - I've learned a huge amount that way.

Many posters have posted pictures of their gardening progress and I've found those very inspirational (even if they are beyond my abilities right now).

I'm lucky to have a green fingered mother in law who is very lovely and has given me some advice but cant help telling me how we should do it and has a habit of moving pots around when she visits to where she thinks.

She'll even clean my loo when she visits!

But don't get me wrong she is fantastic and wouldn't swap her for the world.

She has helped me choose my first 2 plants.

 

Like some other people, I joined this forum because RHS one had closed down. RHS suggested using its Facebook sites, Gardeners Corner and Gardeners World forums as replacement. I had a good look around the sites of these 3 choices and found that GC forum is so much superior in comparison: it is very responsive, informative, members are very supportive and friendly, oh not to forget, their sense of humorous.

I've been here for 2 months now and enjoyed it enormously. I think GC forum is the best of all forums I've come across so far. Thank you !!!

 

Quite a few ex RHS members joined the other forum I post in, but then they stopped posting. Don't know where they've gone now

and to Gardeners Corner. That piccie of your garden looks a bit like a patch of my northfacing lawn...this winter has been tough on lawns that cannot get dry in between long bouts of wet. If it is northfacing, do you really want to sit up there? A few more piccies will help us understand what your garden has to offer and then we can answer your questions more fully,

This the best picture of it so far, a bit easier to see than in my profile, it is south/southwest facing (sun up on the left as you look at this photo), the patch at the top is often in the shadow of tall conifers.

 

Aaaahh it's those bloomin 'orrible conifers that are blocking afternoon sun and leaching the soil of nutrients . You are on a hiding to nothing, trying to get a green lawn there Charlie. A good place for a storage area/shed maybe? I think you may need to feed the soil in order to get a lawn to be happy in that area. Others will be along later to give some advice,

I'm near Guildford.

I too am in rented, our landlady has only owned the place for a year and i think the previous people just let it go.

The front border is over grown with something i'm told is gardeners grass (in the what is this forum), the back path is covered in moss, the path to the garden (pink slabs) is edged by weeds, the grass and small border at the bottom of my pic is hard, mossy and generally un-inspired.

An I like forget me nots but they are everywhere!
