What has happened to our British Clothing Manufacturing Industries ?.

I just purchased a pair of my favourite Trousers, (Farah), I have been buying Farah trousers for many years,it was always a pair of Quality trousers that did what it said on the tin.
The sizes marked on the labels were exactly what you got. A 32 waist was a 32 waist.

The first pair I tried on in the shop were marked 32 waist,in reality they must have been 34 waist. Also the length was WAY out.
A few years ago I could buy this item without trying them on,knowing the size was spot on ,now they are WAY OUT.:dunno:.

Out of curiosity I selected , at random , 5 items of clothing from my wardrobe.
These had been purchased recently from two well known high street stores,
    the labels read the following>>>>

    Number one---Made In China.
    Number Two-- Made In Indonesia.
Number Three -Made In Sri Lanka.
Number Four - Made In Bangladesh.
Number Five-- Made In Morocco.( My Favourite Farah Trousers).

Incidentally the Farah Trousers Hems are not sewn at the bottom of the trouser legs, they have used Wundaweb Easy Hemming which in my view is a temporary repair job not a Manufacturing Procedure.

What Is Your View In The Change Of Which Was Once Quality Items That Have Now Slipped A Great Deal In Very Recent Years..

I don't buy lot of clothing but I am quite an observer when it comes to cut, stitching etc and more often than not some remarkable stitching is done abroad.
But, of course, it is a big environmental waste to have clothes shipped from far away.

I must say that's spot on music, for years I bought 32" waist, now I have to buy 34" - they make them smaller to save money on material in my opinion.

Clothing and shoes sizes went to the "dogs" years ago, Music, and when metric was introduced it made it even worse.:dunno::gaah: Size 9 shoes are either too small or too big. Collar sizes for shirts now are a rarity, Small, Large, Extra Large etc turn out to be any size.:snork:

Because they must shrink inside the wardrobe Shiney, that's the only explanation I can think why mine don;t fit anymore.

You want to check your damp proof course in the walls as it's likely the damp has shrunk them. :ideaIPB:

Ladies' clothes sizes are also completely random, but seem a lot bigger than years ago. I take an 8/10 but if I try vintage clothes on I'd be lucky to get into a 12/14.

It's a conspiracy to keep from us the knowledge that we're a nation of fat birds now.

It's the same with the quality - buy any vintage garment and the fabric quality is always better, even in garments from as little as 5 or 10 years back.

                      Totally agree & relate to....

Not a favourite of mine either.. I do try to buy British but it is getting increasingly harder...!!

The last of the huge cotton industry is being devastated in the US now as well because of China & other Asian countries.....

How the clothing industry has got away with its sizing over the years is a mystery to me.
If it says 32inches it should actually be 32 ins, not some strange figure they seem to think will do.
What other industry gets away with this kind of thing?
Surely its a job for trading standards.

The trouble is, Pete, that the Trading Standards have known about it for years but failed to tackle the problem:dunno::snork:

The thing is, even when stuff was made here it did vary a lot.

Now it all comes from far and wide its a bit worse, but not much.
                        Makes internet buying a nightmare.
