Will grass grow in this bit or is it not worth bothering?

Don't be silly, GA:heehee: ....nice to have you back by the way:snork: . No thread is exclusive and the more that join in the better and I'm sure Charlie appreciates the advice and help from everyone.

I've put some Hosta in large pots and they have survived quite nicely

They're actually much further on now as this warm, wet weather seems to have made them put a spurt on.
The only Hosta that I have in the ground is possibly in the worst spot. It's a large "Blue Angle down by the pond in a shady corner which you think would be ideal for the slugs and snails, but luckily the Thrushes, Blackbird and Frogs seem to keep them down.

A lot of my plants are from Supermarkets, Charlie. I'm like everyone else, when I see a plant I like at a bargain price I buy it!!:heehee: The best Supermarket bargain I've had is a Climbing Rose "Masquerade" which I bought from a now defunct Supermarket. I bought it in the 80's for 50p as a dry root cellophaned package. It's still going strong and flowers brilliantly every year!!

Only been away 3 days and the snails have started already on my Hostas - even though I treated the ground before I went.

I have just been out and took the following photos.

These are in the treated ground - already taking on the 'lacey' look and every year the snails love this patch.

These are in the ground - not treated but are OK and the snails never visit this area.

These are in a pot - always OK

:oopss: I didnt mean to offend, the only things I can get in my supermarket aside from cut flowers are Pansys, violoas and daffodils, which everyone in my road has.

I'd like to make it a bit different if i can.

I'm certainly game for a bargain!

:lunapic 130165696578242 5: Oh, Charlie, I assure you haven't!!!! :snork: What I was trying to say was that, like any gardener, I will buy a plant where ever I see it!!! I buy from Car Boot sales, Supermarkets, Plant Nurseries, Market Stalls.........anywhere I find a plant I like at a price I like.:heehee:

The garden will slowly develop in the style and difference that you want and, as I said, you know when you're getting it right when you walk into the garden and a smile comes to your face!!:hapfeet:

My Salvia and Geum were from a weekly street market in Horsham. £4 each but i got one as a house warming gift, £4 seemed expensive to me but not my mother in law.

I like both plants, Charlie. £4 each from a Market??? Well, it would depend on the quality and size of the plants I guess. Just because it comes from a Market doesn't mean it any less quality than from a Plant Nursery and it would probably cost you twice that amount from there.!!:snork: You've got a Mother in Law that likes you!!!:heehee:

yep, £4 each from a weekly market, my mother in law buys most of hers from there and they all seem to grow well, but she is green fingered. :spinning:

The plants are about a foot tall each and had buds when I got them, the geum is just opening but that is planted in a terractta pot the other is still in its plastic pot from the market.

We get on well, but I think she is angling for grandchildren! Not that a plant is twisting my arm.

:dunno: Not heard of that one, Charlie. Usually you find on sale Lady Stratheden [Yellow} and Mrs Bradshaw [Red} there are quite a number of varieties of Geum now ranging from Yellow, Orange, Red and Pink. It's only a few years ago that there were only around 4 varieties.:snork:

had a good suggestion that I buy some plants that live in the shade and put them in pots on the bit that wont grow grass.

          Hadn't thought of doing that.
