While i was pottering in the garden today i got the stong scent of my Choisya Ternata that is just bursting it's buds....that scent instantly takes me right back to junior school...
All through the winter we were confined to the school playground but then you knew when summer was here because we were then let loose in the school field. It was bordered by an enormous hedge of Choisya Ternata and the scent to me was amazing...every year i smell it it reminds me of the start of the summer and back to the times when the whole school would join in for the obligatory start of the 'British Bull Dog' season....

Does anyone else have a particular scent in the garden that takes them back in time?

Lovely idea for a thread Loli. :blue thumb:
I think any plant smell reminds me of primary and junior school, as we had to walk (in a crocodile in pairs) through a garden centre to get to the playing fields behind to play rounders in the summer. I think one of my earliest memories was lying on the grass inhaling the smell of the damp soil.
And also my mum's deep red roses in our tiny front garden. I remember getting home from school every afternoon in summer when I was a teenager, opening the gate and stopping to smell the roses. My dream was always to have a garden filled with colour and perfume.

:goodpost: Sweet peas - My father loved sweet peas and when I was small he would always let me cut a small bunch for myself. So when my sweet peas flower I still put a few in a vase next to his photo.

Phlox Paniculata - my mum had lots of them when I was a child - didnt have them after we moved from that house - but having them myself reminded me.

            Garden mint

We had some growing under our kitchen window and when I learned "Incy Wincy Spider", I would sit by the mint/drainpipe and sing away time over time over time:
"Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the water spout; down came the rain and washed poor Incy out. Out came the sun and dried up all the rain and Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the spout again"
            Drove my mother mad :heehee:

Garden mint = Incy Wincy Spider and the innocence of childhood.

Freshly mown grass takes me back to student days, lazing on the college lawn during a sunny summer. Also digging up spuds, the smell of the soil reminds me of potato picking when I was about 14 working on the farm.

Cor I loved playing that, the best bit was when everyone except one was out and that last kid stood no chance to get across :snork: I wonder if that is still played? In the winter I loved the great big ice slides across the school playing fields, take a long run up and try and slide for yards or go flying :) We need another thread about kids games :)

basil for me, as my grandmother would have a few pots of it in her backyard, which was a minute strip of land at a quite steep gradient so it was lots of fun for us children to walk up and down it and it was always sunny there.

Cut grass brings back a combination of memories.

In the 1940's and early 50's, the gradually fading smell of the early morning cut grass, in the summer months, whilst the sound of the pigeons cooing in the background gently intruded on the lilting tones of John Arlott's commentary of the test match.

Rosemary, reminds me of the gardens outside the old city of Jerusalem.

The smell of a frosty morning takes me back. My mum taking us to school and seeing the dew hanging on spiders webs in hedges.
