The government are bringing in bigger fines for some offences and extending the law to new offenses.

It already covers using a mobile phone, for calls or texting, and can also be invoked for using hands free if the police think you are not paying enough attention to the road.

It's an automatic three points on your licence and the fine shall be going up from £60 to £90.

They say that they will be actively looking for and clamping down on offenders!

A new penalty of three penalty points and a £90 fine will also be introduced for a number of careless driving offences, including cutting up other drivers, eating a sandwich or lighting a cigarette at the wheel, driving at an inappropriate speed and needlessly hogging the middle lane on a motorway.

It shouldn't affect any GC members because we're all goody goodies!! :heehee:

Think twice before you break the law!

Good. Its about time driving offences were taken more seriously. A car is after all a lethal weapon in the wrong hands. You'd get locked up for life for shooting someone with a gun, but if you wipe out a whole family in one go with a car because you were careless or drunk, you get about 3 years.

Police coffers running short of a few quid then?

Having said that, I am happy to hear that they are going to clamp down on people cutting others up etc, as that seems to be one of the basic skills that most drivers around my way have.

A 50% rise in one go.
If only wages could also go up that easily.

Although, in fairness, how long has it been £60 for? And is £60 really that much of a deterrent nowadays?

Sure, none of us would like to part with £60, but its not exactly a stiff fine is it?

If I were a copper, I'd have got three people between home and work this morning alone!

Mind you, cyclists should also be focussed on as well - the number of them that you see sailing through red lights is getting stupid now. And those that don't use cycle lanes when there is one clearly available to do so should also be made to pay some sort of congestion charge fine.

Ok so the £60 might not be much, or is it?
But personally I'd prefer not to have the 3 points, that should be the deterrent if they were really wanting to stop people offending, which I'm sure they dont, because once you have lost your licence you cant get another motoring fine until they give it back.
Unless of course you drive without a licence, in which case your main sentence is likely to be, ........banned from getting a licence.

PS, as my hourly rate is back where it was 10yrs ago, I'd say £60 is quite a hefty fine.

I think the points are something of a deterrent, but in the same way that £60 is a lot to some people, to others it isn't as significant.

If the individual has never had points on their licence, then three points won't be the end of the world for them - if they already have nine points on their licence however, then those three points suddenly look a whole lot worse.

I suppose its difficult to legislate for all the different offenders that are likely to be caught, and they have to pitch the penalties somewhere where they are harsh enough to deter, but not be overly harsh that they are disproportionate

The chances of being caught using your phone while driving are very, very small. Therefore the consequence has to be bigger.

If the fine was a tenner, and the chances of getting caught were 100%, most people just wouldn't do it because it would mean every call or text costs a minimum of a tenner.

If the fine was £1 Million, and the chances of getting caught were 1:1,000,000, most people wouldn't do it, because even though the chances of getting caught are very, very slim, the consequence is dire, ruination for the rest of your life.

Neither of these conditions is true, so you have to aim somewhere in the middle. Fair and proportionate, but at the same time an effective deterrent.

Good job I'm not in charge, because if I was, then unless someone could give me the best excuse I've ever heard, which would literally have to be something like 'I was phoning for help because my brakes had failed and my throttle pedal is jammed down and I can't switch the engine off' (that happened to someone once), then it would be a fine of one month's wages plus 3 points. That'd put people off doing it.

More than a few times I personally have had near misses with people driving with a phone stuck to their lug, and 9 times out of 10 they didn't even notice because they were too engrossed in their call. A few years ago a study found that it impedes your concentration and judgement even more than being over the legal drink drive limit, yet somehow it just doesn't have the same stigma. Maybe once a few more people have been needlessly killed or badly injured, then it might earn the same social disdain that drink driving has.

So, they could up the points and keep the fine the same.
The whole set up is hypocritical, the last thing they want is a mobile phone user off the road, they just want the money, likewise speeding.
The points up you insurance, so adds slightly to insurance tax, but if they put you off the road they get nothing.

Its all part of squeezing every penny they possibly can out of you.

I should add, I only use a mobile if in a traffic jam in order let someone know I'm likely to be late, but even that is against the law.

Hmm well, it's a matter of personal choice if you get fined for using a mobile behind the wheel. Nobody has to pay it if they don't want to. So not much sympathy then.
