Thanks for the ideas all. I've taken it all onboard, but I'll just pick up on a few points.

I must confess I've hardly bothered with it in weeks. I don't know why, I've just lost my motivation with it a bit. I need to find new inspiration for it. I have a load of ideas for it though, its just a case of deciding what course of action to take with it.

Yes. I have to read at night in order to be able to get to sleep. If I don't, then my mind just wont shut up:)

On other points, we have a local library just in the square, 2 minutes walk from my house. I must confess I've never been in it. I saw the central library fall from glory (a large building with 2 floors of book shelves, cafe, chill out area, fish pond, indoor bike/pram parking area, archive room and leisure hall), now reduced to a single bookshelf in the council offices because the library building has been demolished. I guess I figured if that's how the main library went, then the local ones wouldn't even be worth bothering. I'm beginning to suspect I'm wrong, so I'll pop over and have a look next weekend.

I looked into volunteering a few times, but most of them want people at times that I can't offer, mainly during work time.

Dancing is a cracking plan. Wife and I were going to take up Salsa when we were in Sheffield. Sheffield has the single most excellent bar in the known universe. Down a dodgy little side street where sensible people don't wander at night, there is a pokey little 'house' called Cubana. Cubana is a dingey little hole of a place, with wooden furniture, a tiny bar (most of which is occupied by cigars) and barely room to swing a cat. However despite this, they still manage to fit a live band into the corner, which incidentally is made up of a small number of regulars plus any local musician who fancies having a go. The atmosphere is great, and on saturday daytimes they do 'Salsa y Vino' (basically dance then get drunk on wine). We were going to join, but then circumstances changed and we couldn't really do it. We did say that when the opportunity next arises we'll give it a go. The old folk do line dancing in the church hall next door, and there is a dance school in town.

As for Tai Chi, I did a google last night and have found a club just across town, so I might give them a ring through the week and see what they say.

There is Yoga as well, another very good discipline that I can thoroughly reccomend...

Ever thought of taking up art classes.. A great skill to get under your belt...

Join a book club, good fun & gets you reading all sorts of books..

A diary of your life.. From your earliest memories up to today.. You could tie that in with your family history perhaps...

        Write a book..

Build a greenhouse on your land made from recycled clear plastic bottles...

Bell ringing is a great hobby Clueless & can personally reccomend it.. I have finally had to give it up due to an injury caused elswhere in another interest in life.. It can be obsessive for some but it is brilliant fun.. A very great amount of self discipline & control is needed... Some of the peels contain very complex changes to give us all the pleasure of hearing it as a tune... A great hobby I miss very much..... Tower people are really friendly.. If they are ringing in your local church go up the tower & see them.. If they are ringing wait till they stop then open the door & you will be welcomed..

I agree with you Marley about the Bell Ringing. My father was a bell ringer for our local church and the sound is so lovely. When I was young and heard the bells I used to think that's my Father making that tune (never thought he had help from others).

It most certainly is a wonderful sound Grannie Annie.. Did you not want to ring then as a youngster.? Our youngest 2 ringers are aged 9 & 10 & they put us oldies to shame sometimes...

Why don't you move house then? finding another house - in Sheffield? if you really would like to do this it would be better before your Son got settled in a school. Selling your house, buying another, doing all the decorating, getting the garden in order, that should take care of your boredom for a while!!!:)

Selling up and moving is not a viable option. Wife is happy here, son is happy here and has made friends and settled in at school, lots of people seem happy that we're back, and I'm mostly happy to be back. The only downside is the boredom, which I can surely rectify.

A bored, unsettled feeling is not as easy to rectify as one may think. Obviously moving is out of the question if everyone else is happy, but what to do, hmmm...................!!

Just at thought ... I felt the same a few months back, probably still do to a degree, but it is my frustration with my job that makes me feel bored with everything at the moment, as well as the miserable weather. I have therefore, started a course in ' horticulture'. I thought this might inspire me a little as well. The rain doesn't help at the moment, as i love being outside in the garden and can't be, so i joined the course to help keep the ideas and inspiration flowing to utilise when i can. Also, with the view to widening my career horizons in the future.

The course is through the Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh, and the exams are at the gardens...so;) .. a nice little excuse for a few trips to the Botanical Gardens as well.. Don't tell my OH, he doesn't know this yet! Gives me something else to look forward to and that alleviates boredom as well - perhaps that's what you need to do, book a break somewhere or a holiday for the summer?

Good luck, i'm sure you'll over come your boredom once the nice weather comes along and you can get outside more.
              Pixie.

Most libraries still have lists of organisations and classes. The town hall may also have some. You can check out evening classes in colleges and google for adult education. Then there are clubs of different sorts that may have classes (e.g. my bridge club run lessons).

Don't just look in Redcar as you're not all that far from Middlesborough and Hartlepool.

Try to find more than one thing that may interest you and, particularly, something that you can still do in later life. It's important to have a hobby or interest for when you retire. Don't say you'll bother about that closer to the time as you can never start early enough! A lot of my friends that have hobbies and interests are still going strong in their eighties. Most that didn't have hobbies and interests didn't make it that far!

This is just one site I grabbed from the net
                http://www.stormthecastle.com/the-list-of-hobbies.htm

Voluntary work is also a good option as it can not only be interesting but makes you feel good to be able to help. It also looks good on your CV.

                This may be of use
                http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=10457

Whilst I was still working I enrolled, over the years, for a number of classes. Some I gave up after a few weeks, others I completed but didn't follow up and a few that I followed for years and/or still do.

Good luck with your search. :dbgrtmb:

Pixie, you have a point. My job is part of it. One of my new years resolutions was to devise an exit plan not just for this job, but my current career. Programming computers was fun once, but truth is I've been bored of it for a long time. Imagine hour after hour, day after day, year after year just looking at code.

shiney, good comprehensive answer there. I especially like the massive list of hobbies. I've had a quick scan down and will have a more thorough look after tea.

No offence but it sounds as though you may be retreating into yourself a tad? Get down the pub and force yourself to talk to a few people, you don't have to hang about but it's just a small jolt to waken things up a bit.
There's no shortage of hobbies so I'm sure you can identify one. Local residents' association always want helpers and people have already mentioned about the volunteer route. It sounds to me as though you want a new circle of friends but I could just as easily be wrong.
North Yorkshire moors are on your doorstep so ramblers, hiking, rock climbing clubs are all options and will be a great break from sitting at the desk.
Redcar's on the coast - why not build a boat?
