I'm convinced that this business about hard beds/mattresses being ideal for everyone is a load of old memory foam! A mattress that moulds itself to the body and gives support to the spine is better. After all, not everyone's spine is equally padded:whistle:
But as everyone moves during their sleep, how can a foam that stays compressed be any good?

I bought a memory foam mattress once for wife and me. There were three problems with it.

      1. It was the least romantic mattress we ever had. You get in, and within minutes your body heat starts to 'melt' it and you sink into your own private casing.

      2. It was the least comfortable mattress we ever owned. It would probably be brilliant if once in bed, you don't move an inch until up time, but of course that's not how sleep works. People do move about in their sleep, even if only a tiny bit. Its normal and natural. On a memory foam mattress that means that you first make one imprint in a very specific shape, then as you toss and turn you are no longer on a flat surface, you are on a surface that is the inverse of body shaped from when you first got in. I.e. its uncomfortable as anything. You roll onto your side, and your hips drop into the dent made by your bum, so the as yet uncompressed part of the mattress that previously was under the curve of your lower back, now digs into your side. So after a minute or two you roll over. Great, now there's a big dent where your elbow dug in while you were trying to get comfy on your side.

      3. Even if you're happy to sleep in one position all night, you have to be happy to sleep in that exact same position every night. The memory foam keeps its memory for too long. In a warm room it will slowly revert to its original shape, but in my experience that took more than a day to happen. It meant that for the first 30 minutes after getting into bed after a weekend up home (this was when we lived in Sheffield and came home once a month), it was quite comfy. After that, pain.

I remember when they first came out and the adverts boasted about how they were based on astronauts' cushion thingies that they lay on when a rocket is taking off. Well great, if every time you get into bed you experience 10G for a few minutes followed by hours of 0G, then a memory foam mattress is probably the best thing since sliced bread, but lets face it, its quite unusual to be subjected to such forces in the average domestic bedroom.

That all depends on what the baked bean consumption has been like on any given evening.
