    Hiya

i'm envious of all your beautiful roses and would like to start my own collection. Chimneyrosegarden has been kind enough to start me off with guiding me in the direction of David Austen and Peter Beales.

I'll be growing them in containers so which would you all, as the experts, recommend? What are your advises and tips?

i came across desert rose in my search and have totally fell in love with them so will have a go at that.

My neighbour has been kind enough to let me use her flower pots. what else would i need?

where is the best place to buy seeds and what is your advice on buying them.

    - Kay

Hi Lady.....Wise Owl is our rose expert and hopefully the rest of us are learning from him. :)

First off, yes the desert roses are pretty, but the sap is very poisonous, particularly to young children and animals, so perhaps you may want to think twice about these.

David Austin roses are very expensive and I refuse to pay out for them. I bought my roses from 'Style Roses' and 'Cants of Colchester'. If you can wait until October/November time you will be able to by them bare root, not potted and they will be a lot cheaper.

Roses are hungry and thirsty plants, so if you are planting them in pots they will have to be fed and watered regularly. Mine are in the ground so I can't tell you what sort of soil you would use, perhaps somebody else could help you with that.

There are various threads here in the rose section, have a look around those and they will give you help as to planting, pruning. feeding etc. :)

lol will keep an eye out for all of wise owls posts in this section.

hmmm, i dont have any animals and have no intentions of getting any but kids i have plenty. i have nephews, neices and my own so i guess its better i stay away or just have 1 desert rose away from the kids.

ok, if i was to plant them in the ground which i can also do, what kind of soil would i need? the area i want to plant/place them has full sun light but also breezy and windy during the colder months.

i can wait till oct/nov and i think thats better for me as i'm still saving up.

how close or apart can they be planted? the area is aprox 100cm wide and 300cm long on either side of my path. i would like to plant 10 roses on each side in rows of 2. so thats 20 roses in total. too much?

will pick out the 20 i want and do as much research on them and read the threads on how to take care of them.

        Thank you sheal :)

Good morning Ladyin-Blue could almost be a the name of a Rose;) We have a lot of our friends here that are all Rosarians in there own right:)

I will try and answer your questions to the best of my ability:)
1.In my humble opinion David Austin Roses are to expensive only my personal view of course.

2.When grown in containers they need a lot more watering but still very successful. You say flower pots but what size are they please.

3,As for Desert Rose it's a mystery to me,are you sure you have the correct name?I know of the song and the desert rose grown in Abu Dhabi and the crystallized version, or am I on the end of a practical joke;)

4.With the greatest of respect to you I should perhaps gain a little more Rose experience before you attempt to grow from seed.

All your questions are answered in our sticky Rose threads, but if you need to ask anymore please feel free my friend at anytime,as a combined Rose team on GC we can answer any questions:)

As I said if u look on all the sites suggested and then google a rose you like to get it cheaper.
Have a good read about planting roses first and then work through woos very informative sticky threads at the top of the rose section.
And.dont be deterred by all the information we will all help you along the way . It toik me a while to learn the ropes as sheal and woo will testify :)
If u read a beginners thread like mine u will see how I learn at each stage of the year what to do.
If you go on a site they often state the height and spread of each type of rose so you can figure out how to space them.
I am a david austen fan and am prepared to pay the prices but there are rose classics that are equally as beautiful I will name a few and hopefully others will help

Where does one get rose seeds???
I've seen the scam ones on Ebay but I wouldn't know a decent rose seed from a smack round the ear!
I have always used cuttings or bought a plant. I'd love to try with seeds. :)
