Somehow - 'brought to kindle' doesn't have the same ring as 'brought to book' and 'never judge a book by its cover' becomes what? ..... 'never judge an e-reader by it's make?'

e-book readers try to do the same job as books but there are too many aspects that make the experience of reading a book on paper unique.

I think each has their own merits. I like my Kindle for convenience as I can carry it around in a small handbag. I still buy books ... in fact am waiting on the delivery of two this coming week. I couldn't imagine for a moment having a cookbook or gardening book on the Kindle ... :hate-shocked:

I have a Kindle and wouldn't be without it. I read books of a particular genre and it got to the point where I'd 'read out' my local library. Books, even paperbacks are expensive to buy and reading approximately one a week I just couldn't afford the outlay. Most of what I buy from Amazon now are around £2.00 and some are free.

The only books I wouldn't buy for Kindle are reference books.

What a bunch of Luddites you lot are! It's 2013. Life is electronic. Get used to it!

I read books and have an ereader. I like books because there's lots about, they're cheap or free with endless choice and they often have nice pictures in them. It's easy to use them for reference and flip to and fro enjoying the best bits.

I like my ereader too. I can hold it and turn the page with one hand or prop it up in front of me and it doesn't fall over or flap shut. It doesn't make my hand ache with the effort of holding it in the correct position. I can get loads of great classics free online and store them on the device until I feel like reading them - again. The house is not cluttered up with dog-eared copies waiting for years to be read. When I go on holiday I can take as many books as I like without worrying if I'm going to run out of material. If I go on holiday by myself that's very important. If I'm somewhere far-flung I won't have to worry about finding an English language book to buy.

The ereader needs recharging but that use of energy is minimal compared to what it would cost to transport materials and product associated with paper books.

Clueless, you're not alone in playing future archaeologist. I was wondering yesterday what they're going to think in 6013 when they dig up all those grey and crumbling wheelie bins.

I expect so, they were probably all members of GCBC.

But what if (paper) reference books came with the option of purchasing the e-book version at a reduced cost for the bundle? (enabling searching, copy/paste, etc.)

That wouldn't make any difference Scrungee. From time to time I need to locate a specific part of a book and that's not easy with a Kindle. Also they are not practical for say DIY books, I find I need to refer to - to many pages at once which is much easier with a 'paper' book as you can flip backwards and forwards. :)

                    :)

Not Luddites! :nonofinger: I've got a mobile phone! :heehee: O.K., it only makes phone calls and cost £2.95 but it does all I want it for.

I use electronic items as tools for what I wish to do. but enjoy the feel and look of books and have no problem with them re comfort and nuisance. They come free, from the library, and I'm too stingy to pay out for equipment I don't need :heehee:. The cost of an ereader would pay for a lot of excellent three course lunches at a pub in one of the villages around us (£7.50 for wrinklies :old:).

When I was a lad! :snork: I remember saying to young Ned Ludd "There's nothing wrong with sticking to the old ways, and what was good for my grandfather is good for us!! But make sure you don't resort to violence."

Would he listen? No! That's the trouble with youngsters
