A very good evening to one and awl

Been contemplating some lighting for my patch and I'm at at a loss on what to go for?

It'll be used for highlighting some feature plants as well as lighting up the garden. I'm not adverse to using high level lighting either as well as ground level.

What type are you guys/gals using or what do you recommend? I don't want mega wattage as to contribute greatly to the 'leccy companies so would LEDs be bright enough?

    Cheers ears,

    Al

There are some fantastic LED bulbs available now Al - many of them are suitable for 'conventional' type fittings such as bayonet, Edison Screw, Small Edison Screw, etc etc.

One thing is for sure, solar lights are no good - not worth a light, you might say!

If it helps, I have bought the white version of these and used them under cupboards in my kitchen to illuminate the work surface, and they are much brighter than the fluorescents that went before them. If you could get a transparent pipe (fishtank air supply pipe?), slide this inside, silicone both ends and then run a cable back indoors to the transformer it might be just the ticket? That would also mean that you are only sending low voltage (12v) outside, and keeping the hot stuff indoors.

I even fitted them to the boot of my old car - I will see if I can find a photo and post back.

If you choose wisely, then yes. LEDs are up there with all the other light technologies nowadays in terms of brightness, and of course they are super efficient.

I do agree that they are not lights for "lighting" per se; but, as they are the *only* lights I have in my garden - and are used to 'mark' places - they *do* have their uses :)

For those of us (ok, me) who are not electricians and don't fancy going that route, solar lights add a subtle atmosphere :heehee:

Good luck in choosing, al. I think it is safe to say that, whatever you choose, you are going to do a fantastic job of it :dbgrtmb:

I'm sure they will be fine for some, especially the LED ones that are available now as they should be so energy efficient that they run all night; I tried them last year, and they were no good to us - besides anything else, they were very easily broken by dog & child running around, so they didn't really last any length of time.

I do have a few marker solar lights, but they are not very good tbh, very dim and they don't last, but saying that, they were about a quid each!

I had some sockets put in the garage and an all weather one outside ready for things like lighting.
I did put 20 of the small individual LEDs in the decking that I wired to behind the tv that are very good, so I suppose a cluster of LEDs in a light would produce a good light.

I'm thinking along the garage a set of 5 down lighters, a couple on the shed, and some sort of wall lights on the house. I want something either on the posts or panels as well as low level lights. Also, some up lighters would be good too.

Sorry Al n, not with you on this one, I just see them as more pollution....added to the very annoying security lights everywhere and street lights too! Does nobody like darkness anymore?

Therein lies the beauty of LED Sheal - they give of a much more direct light that remains 'local' - they are generally brighter where you want them to be bright, but don't spread their light as far.

In fact, many local councils are now changing street lights over to LED, and they really are impressive. Some of the roads near me have been done recently, including the street we used to live in, and where the light on the street/pavements is actually brighter/better, the light pollution into houses and even skywards is dramatically reduced.

I actually do agree, but I like being outdoors in my garden as much as possible, and if I can extend that into the night without annoying the neighbours or suchlike then happee dayz!
