Plan? Hahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa!! Less stressful to use a 'natural evolution' of the garden, aka a lazyman's approach lol

Lots of work ahead so take it easy - weather this weekend should be good and it's easy to forget the sunburn until too late when your toiling away...
Looks like you'll be needing a skip if you're putting the plan into action so maybe a few friends, beer and a bbq in return for some labour this weekend?

Thanks for the welcome everybody. Loofa, I do have a few friends that have offered to help but I want to wait until I am seriously stuck before I scream for help. :)

Yvonne, I just had a look at your thread and it looks like you are doing really well. I have been using the Flymo strimmer on my garden and am amazed at how well it works! WOW! The only problem is that the battery lasts about 15-20 minutes and needs 3 hours to recharge. This means that I will still be strimming today but the results are instant and excellent. I will pop in occasionally to update or ask for advice.

charlie grass.jpg A pic taken today so you can see what I have to deal with. That's my 9 year old son and he's tall! Anyway, 3/4 of the way through the garden and just this bit to go. I'm thinking I might need a saw for the 2 inch thick weeds/brambles. :D

That's a heck of a job you got there, Samantha. Take your time with it and it will become less of a chore. It looks like you've got plenty of space to make a garden how you want it to be.:snork:

Shouldn't he have a garden clearance tool in his hands... ? Free helping hands!

Battery powered tools for the garden tend to be a bit rubbish to be honest for reasons you've already discovered.

Haha! He's not too bad at helping me around the house and he did do the weeding in the front garden last week so I let him off. Plus, I was using a really dangerous machine ;)

6pm last night. No, I did not just mow/cut/strim around him. :D

Now I need some advice. What next? Hahaha!
Seriously, I think to get anywhere near my plan I have to kill everything but I have two cats that I quite like. Is this the right move and what can I use to avoid killing my babies? I have read vinegar and hot water rather than salt and hot water as salt destroys the soil completely. I have also read that Round Up is good to use when you have pets as long as you keep them indoors for a couple of hours on a sunny day as it dries quickly. What do you think?

Don't use salt, that will get into the soil and make it difficult to grow stuff in the future. Vinegar and hot water? I've not heard of that before, I can't see that being effective over your area. The best product to use is Round Up (or go for Wilkos cheaper alternative, it has the same active ingredient: 'glyphosate')

                          http://www.wilko.com/weed-killers/wilko-systemic-weedkiller-spray-3l/invt/0330903

Now for the bad news, it's better to apply roundup (glyphosate) on actively growing green weeds, so the best time to have sprayed them would have been before you strimmed them all down (then waited a few days for it to work). I'm afraid you need to wait for your weeds to start growing again before spraying :dbgrtmb:

At some point is it all going to be dug up for your grand plan? If so you could hand weed at the same time?
