That's because the pollen is ready to be blown by the wind as well as taken by insects and cross pollinated, Spruce. But the central boss of the flower stays the same shape which helps ID the poppy.:coffee::snork:

You're on your own, Pal:lunapic 130165696578242 5: There are so many red Perrenial Poppies out there and so many have been misnamed and ID'd because of it.:dunno::heehee:

I absolutely love poppies. I grow
            P somniferum
            P orientale
            M cambrica
            Romneya coulteri
            and some unknown orange one.

I would love to get Californian poppies going but no matter how many times I've put seed down I only get a few weedy plants and they have failed to seed around. Ditto Danish flag and Shirley poppies - I've bought plants of these from the garden centre and put them in but they deteriorate rapidly and also fail to seed around.

Any advice? I've sown direct as this is what they seem to like.

I don't even think about the blue Meconopsis, might as well set fire to tenners as buy that one!

So what does everyone else grow in the poppy line?

All the poppies in my garden have just 'appeared', I've never planted any. I have the red 'flanders' poppy which just self seeds wherever it fancies every year. As you can imagine it's everywhere in this area. Also have some orange californian poppies which I thought were supposed to be annuals but never die back completely and come up every year. The little yellow welsh poppies grow through the paving and border edging in the front garden. There's some red poppies similar to Spruce's one above and this one which pops up all over the place:

The only perennial poppy I was worried about was the White "Checkers" as that disappeared underground all through the Winter while the others still showed leaves. However, when tidying up one of the borders yesterday I uncovered it from a pile of leaves and debris......so now I'm happier!!:hapydancsmil::coffee:
