Sorry, what I meant to write was Condom. A variety of tom that acts as a prophylactic.

My freaky alicante that went blind back on page 42 has fruit developing all the way up the stem with the first truss approximately 2" from the soil level. Im considering saving the seed to see if it will do it consistently - either that or burning the plant as the genetic mutant it appears to be !

Just thought I'd check in to see if my tomatoes are fairing as well as others as they are in a new raised bed this year. Mine are generally about a 1-1½ feet tall and fairly sturdy looking and all have the first tranche of little budlets (no flowers yet). Sun Baby, Marmande, Alisa Craig doing better than Alicante which is in general a bit weedier looking.
Is this about right what with the weather and coolness this spring?

              Cheers
              GG

Gay Gardener, for outdoor ones it's about right. Most of us reckon we are 2 to 3 weeks behind the average year.

Thanks JWK, thought as much, though noticed some flowers this morning starting to open, so suppose that is something. Do you know if Alicante is generally a less robust looking plant?

                  Cheers

Sorry I don't know that. Some of us have noticed marked differences between certain varieties, for example Freddy and me have grown spindly Rosadas, it must be down to the cold wet spring I guess.
