I'll save all of you taxing your brains

It's, winding the runnerbeans up the canes. Instead of letting them waste energy weaving around trying to find the cane I wind them up by hand. Once they're on the canes they grow quicker. :dbgrtmb:

Of course, you need to wind them in the right direction.

Clueless - Apart from my patio table and chairs this is the seat I have tucked away in my garden -

That's always an awkward question. The answer is 'yes' but when anyone asks me to describe it I say 'it goes from bottom left of the cane, across the front, to top right'. Some people have trouble imagining 'anti-clockwise' when it goes in a spiral - except witches, of course!

Its about the way beans climb, and how snail shells curl, and so many other things in nature. A clever chap observed that starting with the smallest unit in any organism, things growing from it multiply in size almost always in proportions matching the numbers in the sequence.

When I was a student quite a long time ago, there was a challenge at our uni for someone to mathematically prove the logic of fibonacci, because after all, everything in nature boils down to mathematics right? Well, nobody cracked it when I was there, and although I've not been an academic for a good while now, I've not heard of anyone else cracking it yet.

In essence, its all about magic spirals.

Great thread C1, 3 pages of chatter in a couple of days :)

Snap! Plus the reason why you think my garden, and perhaps everyone else likewise, is better than yours is that I am VERY selective when I take a photo of mine :)

Was chatting to someone the other day and the garden he manages is used for pucker photo-shoots. A client wanted a lawn tennis court for a photo shoot in Vanity Fair, and he was disappointed that his grass was not immaculately pin-stripe when they did the shoot. He needn't have worried, when he saw the magazine the lawn looked immaculate (more time spent air brushing the lawn than the models it seems!)

We have several seats around the garden, they are a nuisance as I have to clean the muck off them and I don't think I've ever seen anyone sit on them. When Mrs K and I are gardening and one of us toddles off to make a tray of tea, say, it is then taken to wherever we are working and we just sit on the lawn nearby ... and we then chat about this & that change that we might make to the garden, and then get back to work!

However ... we do have an utterly fantastic table on the terrace, which overlooks part of the garden, so that we can sit with friends and enjoy a meal or a drink whilst being "in" the garden, without necessarily having to go "into" the garden. Strongly recommend that.

We thought our table was a huge extravagance when we bought it, it's round and seats up to 15, and is made of English Oak :), but it has given us years of magical memories.
