I'm on the lookout for plants for our "Hot" border. Flowers must be a good strong red. Names and Photos please :) My Lupin Beefeater is looking particularly good at present

        Have a look at Physocarpus
        http://www.paghat.com/ninebark.html

I'm not sure this will be what you want. The leaves change, through the seasons, between deep deep purple, through to orange and deep burgundy.

The only problem for you would be that the flowers are white but turn to a brilliant red when the seed heads form in a big pompom type head.

I'm sure you must have some of the deep red poppies. We can't remember the name of these that we have blooming in the garden at the moment!

The centres are interesting with them being a light purple colour.

If you're going to the Open Gardens at Lode on the 14th July

        http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/gardenfinder/garden.aspx?id=19362

Richard at 21 Lode Road has a lot of colour (can't remember how much red) and then you could pop down the road to Anglesey Abbey to see their summer garden. Richard should be able to give you some ideas as he got his OBE for services to gardening. He was the person who gve us our original Phytolacca :blue thumb:

Couple of ideas. An herbaceous plant which is really easy from seed is Geum Mrs Bradshaw (idiot me just read Shiney's post great minds ? and all that!!! sorry). Here (I'll be later than you being in Scotland) they are just starting to flower and keep flowering for absolutely ages.Apart from reasonable soil they ask for nothing, never sick or sorry, withstand wind and rain well and have good green foliage. Not too tall so good for the front of the bed. Photos of mine are rubbish as was actually taking the photos for another purpose than taking them. They are redder than in the photo too. Bishop of Llandaff Dahlia cracking with almost black foliage.Astilbe Fanal, very good colour Photos copied off the net as mine not flowering yet . CIMG2452.JPG CIMG2455.JPG [IMG][IMG]

Great foliage plant JWK and a cinch to increase. Just pop growing shoots in water and they will grow roots in days!

There are likely to be many on that list that have red/purple leves but different coloured flowers. Such as (at the top of your list) Ajuga, which has bright blue flowers. We've got plenty of that around the garden.

The sambuccus can grow very quickly. We used to cut ours down to 1ft each autumn and it grew to 10ft very easily each summer.

Yes, I'm "stooling" mine like that. The Continus too. Both seem to take to that (and I had a Sambucus in a previous garden which was fantastic, grew quickly, I never cut it back, and it died after relatively few years - so hopefully stooling will prolong the Sambucus's life too.

I bought a cimicfuga yesterday, very dark foliage, like a sambucus with bottle brush pink flowers rather than white. Might go better that the white flower version.

Now that's I've gone and looked it up it was on my wants list, but I didn't know there was a purple leaf form. Apparently Actaea simplex Atropurpurea Group and there is one called 'Brunette which I expect I could fancy :heehee:
