My Garden's Working Progress

More pictures of the garden, which is now flowering.Not nice and tidy but I like it this way.



Nigellas along picket fence, which have now spread to the vegetable patch.









Veg patch, a bit weedy, I'm afraid. Have large patches which I should really fill soon.



Front garden, is a bit neglected and has gone a bit made with daisies this year. The bees like it though.

 

Also forgot to show you all my most favourite thing in the whole garden at the moment is what a friend across the road made for me.

Last year while I was hammering away at the raised terrace outside our back door we had a small trap to fit two pipes and a garden tap hovering above. Naturally all of this couldn't fit into such a small opening, tipping a bucket of water down here was so difficult to do.



Getting the whole drain redone would have cost a lot of money to simply lower it and it was deemed not worth it. So instead I asked my neighbour/friend across the road, who works with metal to create a sort of large sink to sit over the hole and act like a large funnel.

This is what he came up with. Now I can use the tap without fear of water not going down the hole and tip buckets of water down here too.



Even better is (in my eyes at least) it has become a sort of water feature. When I have the washing machine running the pipe on the left drains water out and creates a whirlpool effect, full of suds and all. I could watch it for hours! Also when Dave has a shower and I'm in the garden water trickles down the large pipe on the right (which I will replace when I get my ladder back), hits the stainless steel and then falls down the hole in the middle. It genuinely sounds like one of those expensive stainless steel water feature rills does and it doesn't cost me a penny to run.

Am contemplating getting a cover/grill made up for it, but I haven't decided yet. I wonder if it will block up easily with leaves this autumn otherwise.

Them's big - well, depends what rootstock of course. A Fan? or Cordon / Double/Triple cordon perhaps?



Or candelabra, basket weave, or Belgian / double lattice or diamond even?

Your garden looks great JJ. It doesn't seem that long ago you had the footpath laid and now surrounded by plants you would think it's been there for years. You've certainly worked hard and it's paid off.

 

I forgot just how extensive apple tree options are. I think I will just go for a bog standard one after reading up how to create espaliers and that it would take round 7 years before it fruited anyway. I'm not sure if I will be here by then. I do have patience but I don't have that much of it to wait for fruit that long.

I was thinking about one of these but wonder if it will fit in the hole, as the hole in the funnel is smaller than your standard guttering down pipe. I suppose at that price I could buy one and have a tinker with it.

 

Is one of these an option? Not sure how you would make sure it stayed in place though.

Have just emailed some pictures off to Gardeners World Magazine in the hope of them printing them in the Readers Makeover bit.

Not sure if I will get very far, as it's not as well manicured as some of the ones I've seen in the past.

 

Oh, JJ, what a fab idea!!!! Wishing you the very best of British In my opinion, you are definitely a winner! (Blast! I forgot to sign up to be on the judges panel though ).

I think you are in with as good a chance as many; and will clearly surpass a good number of entrants.

A week on and still no response from GW. I will assume that my garden was a bit too messy to be shown in the garden makeover section.

Oh well on with designing out the pergola........
