2013 Growing Season

Haven't updated for some time, but everything has been planted for some time, so it's just (mostly) a case of maintaining and watching it grow. Harvested some Lettuce, Webbs Wonderful and All The Year Round. Most will be familiar with Webbs Wonderful, but ATYR are a 'Butterhead', and have been quite a surprise for me as they are so tender, so I will definitely be growing these again. Broad Beans are looking very good, probably the best I've ever grown. Runner Beans are looking a bit sick, not really growing at all. The Bridgwater Beans are looking healthy and are showing signs of good growth ahead. Garlic looks like it will soon be ready to crop, maybe another month. Spuds are coming along, but are showing signs that rain is needed. In the past I've watered them, but I'm not convinced that doing this doesn't spoil the flavour a bit. Cabbages are looking good, and I shall be having one this weekend Parsips are really starting to grow now, probably 1ft tall. My first sowing of Carrots are looking good, but my second sowing are very sparse. Maybe slugs got at them as they emerged? Shallots are starting to 'bulb up', so maybe a couple of months before harvesting. Apart from my Onions in the 'Challenge', I also have another bed of 'ordinary' Onions, which are coming along nicely. I had planned on growing a couple of Cuccumbers, but didn't have the space, so I've planted one in a large pot, Burpless Tasty Green. I've never grown an 'outdoor' type before, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. I have some Leeks in a deep-ish pot and are looking better that ones grown in the past at this stage. In the past, I've put the seedlings into seed trays or the like, so I think it's important to plants seedlings into a good depth. The plan is to put these in the potato bed, once harvesting begins.

We need some rain!

Mine look absolutely fantastic, the best I have ever grown ... trouble is that the cloves I bought are still, shrivelled, in the packet on the shelf and the ones in the garden are the bits I missed when I harvested them last year ... says a lot, given how shocking I am at doing things on time, for getting them in early and letting the cold weather "clove them up"

Do you not eat spuds often (like us) or have lots of containers perhaps?

 

Everything is going mad in my little patch.....

 

Outdoor Sweetcorn (that i planted out way too early...didn't i Kristen) and a couple of indoor ones planted around the same time....

 

Well, I had a "Furtle" around, and decided it was worth digging one up. There was enough for one meal, which ain't bad considering the plant was looking a bit sickly. I cut my first cabbage, Hispi, looking forward to my dinner

 

Picked first broad beans yesterday!! Peas looking good at last.
Only thing which hasn't germinated is sweetcorn - not a sign of it, and it's indoors in a warm, sunny spot.

 

Covered the Strawberries, as we've got some very hungry Blackbirds at the moment, they've destroyed the carrot & salad beds and pulled up the Nasturtiums
