lolimac - your photos show pretty well what has happened with some of mine. I am certain that I didn't miss any robbers on mine, as its one of the few things I am quite careful about.

Mine also have flowers on both sides of the V, so I am loath to whip one side off?

I'm hoping that I will get the same amount of produce from a smaller plant due to these split stems?

Re these split stems, if you are loath to snip one of them off then what I'd do is let one form one truss then nip out the growing tip above it. The other unipped stem will then become the main leader again.

Planted my Toms in greenhouse today - v.late I know. Guess what? On closer inspection I have flat-stems forming a V on a couple of mine too. Don't think I've ever seen that before ... but there again I've never grown these varieties before.

I had two of each variety, one was in 3L Deep Rose pot, the other in 2L (should have been potted on and/or planted out ages ago, but there we are). Very little to choose between them, even though the 2L has obviosuly had more stress from water, although I suppose we haven't had more than a couple of really hot days this year. The 3L Deep had a really well developed rootball though, so maybe we'll see a difference now that they are planted. They are all about shoulder height, and pretty weedy looking - lack of light earlier in the season along with lack of TLC as been v.busy with lots of things, both garden and non-garden, this year.

Cut all the Comfrey down and laid as a mulch. Right now it looked pretty excessive!

The 'odd stem' thing has only happened on some of my Beefmasters....even my grafted one:scratch:
They are doing OK but not known it before.....

Be interested to hear what you think of Moneymake Woo. I used to grow them, and thought they lacked taste/flavour, but they remain a very popular choice. Be interested to hear how you rate the flavour - when you have some that are ripe :)

I notice that two of my Toms (1 in the greenhouse, 1 outdoors) have formed 'V's, and what I would consider to be the 'main' stem on one of these has gone 'blind', I also noticed that a truss has split into three. Weird eh?

Its really odd that so many of us have plants that have decided to form V-shaped stems; mine seem really healthy in all other respects, growth is solid and steady even if its not exuberant.

I managed to snap the growing tip off one of my outdoor Ailsa Craig's earlier, so goodness knows what is going to come of it - given that I have 9 others out there, I'm not overly concerned.

The Maskotkas are still looking like they will be the first to give me something edible - they seem to be pretty bomb proof, as they have been battered by the wind and are properly rough looking wee things, but they are lobbing tomatoes out one after the other at the moment.

Here are the indoor team today after giving the greenhouse a good gutting out:

Still a few stragglers in the wee square pots on the shelving at the back - hopefully I will sort the best of them and pot them into the big pots tomorrow and bin the rest.

I still think its something to do with the temperatures in spring - we had that short warm spell after lengthy cold which got things moving, only for it to turn cold again which made everything stall - maybe its the stalling that caused the split stems?

As they are looking happy enough, I am working on the assumption that mother nature knows better than I do?

That thought crossed my mind, so I checked, different varieties....

All your toms and greenhouse are looking good FC.

Why have you got that reflective material in the corner?
