I think the problem was that in the initial stages of this Thread, Doug, enthusiasm was leading the methods of distributing seeds down many paths which could have led to such a good idea being turned into something that could have done more harm to the marking of the event than good.
I'm also pretty sure that the British Legion, and associated organisations, are going to be on the ball regarding the Centenary but I am sure they will be receptive to suggestions.........I'm also sure that they will also be inundated with them too.!!! But individuals approaching Councils and other organisations to suggest an emphasis in public gardens, road islands that have plant beds on them, etc, on growing the symbol of the Rememberance of Wars i.e. the Red Poppy would to me appear to be a good thing.

One of my small wildflower patches at home is producing a good crop of poppies this year.

      Poppies.jpg

I've decided to collect as many of the seeds seeds as possible. I've already got my eye on a small patch of scruffy ground across the road which nobody seems to maintain.

If I can find out who owns it and get the all clear, I could have it full of poppies next year. Loads of school children and parents walk past that spot every day, so it would certainly be noticed.
:ideaIPB: Mrs Trunky works at one of those schools, wonder if they'd like to get involved and grow a patch in their grounds?

I'd also be more than happy to provide some of the saved seeds to other GC members of course. :dbgrtmb:

Good idea, I never thought of the schools. I could ask the missus to ask at the lad's school.

That's what google is for:) It would be a monumental task to compile a massive list of organisations in the UK. Without spending money on an outdated list from an expensive list broker (eq Experian, CACI, Dunn & Bradstreet etc), it could only work if we all pitch in and manually find appropriate organisations in our respective local areas.

I agree with Clueless. The British Legion and other organisations will, I'm sure, already be planning for the Event whereas the local Councils and organisations will not have it as a major priority and therefore individuals approaching them would be more effective.

To the best of my knowledge, this has been posted on BookFace prior to your post  It is gathering huge momentum; in principle.
Local councils may not have the funds available (in such austere times) to promote and encourage this type of community venture.

However, in the spirit of WW austerity, if individuals are to approach their local council, it would add weight to their argument IF they would also provide/donate seed, of the right variety of poppy, conducive/applicable to this particular act of remembrance (aka not *any* poppy seed, but a specific variety in keeping with the tradition). And this is where GC has the greatest advantage: not in promoting the concept (it's already "out there" ) but by providing the mahoosive amount of seed that would be required to perform the operation!

It is one thing to promote the idea/concept. It is quite another to provide the "tools"/seed to enable the concept to move forward from idea into any semblance of 'reality'. Don't go into this half cocked; the idea is one thing, the seed availability is another and one is impotent without the other. If you are asking for something (from councils/schools/businesses/whoever, be prepared to meet them half way before asking for anything!)

Gather your seeds, along with your argument and that way, who can refuse, when the majority of the work has already been undertaken and all you are asking for is the underlining? :dunno:

Go empty handed and ask for them to fund your idea and you are setting yourself up for a mahoosive :nonofinger:

Basically, put your money where your mouth is ;)

I love this idea and have already seen posts about it on facebook. When would the seeds have to be planted for best results?

I hope all the enthusiasm herein will be backup up with action, cos I've started contacting people now and I'll look daft if it fizzles out:help:

Also, I have a wild section in my garden and among the stuff that's put its self there, I have some poppies. I'm not sure if they're the right ones though (not the opium poppies out the back). Have a see what we think. Are these the right ones?
