Thing is Zigs , and to coin a phrase, it's not the winning but the taking part. By nature, I'm not competitive and this was meant to be a bit of fun. So disappointing that folks have had problems...

No need to feel bad Freddy, I'm not particularly bothered after all it's a learning experience, and they will still be edible (won't they?)

Some of the others are not as thick necked as that one, so I'm still in with a chance.

Anyway, I've been thinking, it's not that mine have thick necks it's just that they have small bulbs :) I've applied a weak dose of Potash - it will be interesting to see if it will rectify the situation.

          Hiya John, thanks for that:)

I'm sure they'll be edible, but might not store well?:dunno: Having said that, hopefully not all have been affected. I know pretty much nothing about 'Bull neck', so it'll be interesting (as you say) to see if it can be rectified.

I thought that Kelsae didn't store well anyway? (even without this bull neck issue)

I wouldn't know, but according to Vince, they store well.

Btw John, if you do have 'Bull neck', do you think it was caused by the CMP's?

The comfrey tea with the CMPs hasn't brewed yet, so I can't blame that. Last year the bed had Peas and I haven't added any manure or compost to it. I used BF&B and CMP when I prepared the bed in April, I must have added too much I guess.

              Hiya John.

Interesting. I imagine that Peas will add Nitrogen to the soil? I gave my bed a good 'mucking' late on last year. I too added BF&B to the soil just before planting, and CMP's later on at the stated dose. Did you use more than recommended?

Chop them up and freeze them!

Kelsae's aren't supposed to store well but I've had no problem storing them up to 6 month!

              Anyway here's my meagre offerings.....

              kelsaes 002a.jpg

Not doing too badly considering having to re-plant the bed twice!

                Good idea!

Here's hoping mine recover then, thanks.

10/10 for trying Vince, the cards have been stacked against you this year. You're going to get something though.

Been out and took more photos this morning, I have got a lot of variation in mine.

This first photo is the same bull-neck onion in the photo yesterday above from a different angle. It does have a bulb shape so all is not lost. It's 10" diameter.

                  20130701-IMG_8095.jpg

I've got others that look a bit more like Freddy's, squatter and more shapely. I've also got a couple of runts like these that are more like leeks:

Vince, considering the problems you've had, yours look like they're doing well for much later sown:blue thumb:
John, from that angle it does look different:)

It's been quite a journey, still a few months to go yet though, so, who knows?:blue thumb:
