I've just had to trim off a couple of stray branches on my Salix (with the nice pink feathery tips, can't remember the proper name) which were unbalancing the look of the tree. I didn't want to throw them away so stripped the stem back and popped them into a corner of the border. Do you think I have any chance of them taking?

Just found out it is the flamingo tree!

 

My friend and I went to her local garden centre yesterday. they had filled hanging baskets half price, so we filled the car, Nissan Micra, I had one on my lap the above 2 are just an example, 7 in all we looked like a mobile shrubbery.

 

"Flamingo" perhaps?

Salix/Willow root easily, but I rather wonder if Flamingo is grafted? I've only ever seen them as lollipop standards

Article in RHS Magazine "The Garden" this month about a Prairie Garden (Morlands Farm, West Sussex http://sussexprairiegarden.co.uk/ ) initially planted in 2008 (and which I seem to remember seeing on Gardeners World the first summer after planting ...)

The article says: They only ever bought 2 or 3 of each plant. The plants chosen were easy to propagate. Most took only two years to bulk up.

I'm sure there is a bit more to it than that!! because the article goes on "In May 2008, with the help of some friends and relatives, they put in 30,000 plants" Its a 6 acre site ... probably worth a visit as it is now open to the public.

 

Love that Achillea and Salvia combi Scorpio. All in all, some very desirable plants there ,

I ordered hollies from Buckingham Nurseries in the Spring, for my "Serpentine Walk" labyrinth and was disappointed that they were sold out as I thought that would cost me a season's growth ... but the final batch arrived today, and most of them are a lot taller than the 12-18" advertised I'll pot them all on from the 9cm they are in perhaps straight to 2L as they are a decent size, and a few months in the greenhouse should give me a waist-high plant by the Autumn



Handsworth New Silver at the back - that's a Female variety, the male equivalent is called
"Silver Queen" - obviously!! Hopefully they will look good with berries on, although I do wonder whether for the maze I should have picked the male variety ... The ones in the front are Madame Briot (also female ... more obvious from the name this time!).

I already have a batch of Golden King (which is also a female variety - you couldn't make this up, could you?!!) and which has almost spine-free leaves, and Our Man Dee-Eye's favourite Holly Ferox Argentea - that's definitely prickly, it even has spines on the leaf surface.

Can't take a picture as camera battery on charge, but i have bought some comfrey roots I can't wait to see if it makes a difference to my vegetables next year. It will have to work hard, as i've done not a bad job this year with just my garden compost from grass clippings and kitchen waste. May just add it to my compost next year, rather than make stinky stuff.
