In the local Co-op they sell bunches of the most gorgeous deep red roses, so this got me thinking, if I buy a bunch, could I root some? has anyone tried this? apparently it is possible but not easy.

No harm in trying. I've never tried it so I'm just guessing. Aren't most modern roses grafted?

Yes they are but those little rose bushes you can buy like the one I have pictured are rooted cuttings!!!

I have a Hydrangea that I grew from a cut flower from a florist - 'coz I liked the colour. Mind you, Hydrangeas will pretty much root in water of course ... Rose might be a bit more tricky.

I use those Gel2Root pots for cuttings that I want to give the best chance of success to.

I saw a video how easy it was to propagate roses - done in late summer/autumn - cut into strips minus thorns/leaves, wrap in newspaper the into a plastic bag and put away for a couple of months - easy - except they all rotted :loll:

Some people can just cut bits off and stick them in the ground and they root - has never worked for me though.

I have grown cuttings from some home grown Roses which I used up after their flowers have faded. One I put in potting compost and one I left in water - both worked (but I think commercially grown ones are different) although the one in water took months to root.

Ohh Val is 2 weeks that i go to my local garden and can`t find anything interesting , I wanted to start a thread about how many plants can we get out of a bunch of flower ....even asked the flowerist why he doesn`t sell any interesting flower........his answer was that in South Africa is winter ........that makes you think a lot ;)

we should really start a thread regarding plants out flowers , I`m in ;)

Just updating this, the cutting I put in a pot of soil just dried up, but 2 of the cuttings in water are rooting!!!! one has even put out a side shoot!! So if anyone else want to try this it should only take 3 weeks to root!! I wonder how long before I get my first red rose??
