I've just bought some Clueless. :) Now I've got to work out what to do with 10,000 seeds! Sowing time was September wasn't it? Okay, if I disappear in September and you don't see me on here until November you know I'm still out there! :heehee:

Oh no... I bought two packets of poppy seeds a few weeks back after seeing it on fb..... Didn't think about them being native or not :/ I shall be buying the correct ones. Now if somebody can just tell me what to do with them :gaah:

Put them in your garden anyway. I can't think of any poppy variety that isn't gorgeous. I just wouldn't release a non-native one into the wild, or indeed any of them without the landowner's permission.

I believe the poppy population increased considerably after the battles had finished and poppies grow in cornfields after the corn has been sown and is growing so not likely to be disturbed ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad someone has found the seeds at such great prices

I think what's being pointed out, Doug, is that when the farmer ploughs the fields he obviously disturbs the soil bringing the Poppy seeds into the light and air. So it's the disturbing of the ground that causes the Poppies to grow and obviously the Poppies will be protected by the crops it's growing among and will be undisturbed until the Farmer decides to harvest the crops. One of the unforunate factors is that today's mass use of herbicides is making the sight of the Poppy growing in a field of crops a rarer sight. I visit Rutland and the surrounding area quite often and it's one of the few places where you can see fields like this:

Well hopefully by this time next year there will be many Rutland scenes across the country the area obviously hasn't been touched for many years and there must be many other sites that can be transformed

Armandii .... Thank you for clarifying whether or not Poppy's thrive in disturbed or undisturbed land
Tbh I was only quoting a previous message from zigs " They don't tolerate root disturbance at all well,". might get away with it in modules, but i'd do a quick test run this year, don't want folk coming back to you complaining .. But am confused at the later message from him ........ Anyway if we can all concentrate on one thing now ..... Raising awareness within our communities... Via schools, councils etc and gaining permission from the various authorities and landowners to sow the poppy seed.......

              I understand now.

Poppies don't like to be transplanted.

I've just had a response from theBumblebee Conservation Trust

It looks like we may be able to work together to make this happen. That would be awesome. Here's what they've said.

So now its not just us lot. If these guys get involved, then that kind of raises the bar a little bit:)

Well that is fantastic news and makes this project totally credible..

By the end of next week I hopefully will have some similar fantastic news which could involve many schools ....... I promise to keep you posted as the information gets confirmed or not

Hi Doug, actually that's not the case as the Farmer grows crops in those fields every year:heehee: But he's a traditionalist who sells to local shops, bakeries etc and farms organically so there's no use of herbicides, hence the consistent appearance of the poppies.:hapfeet::hapydancsmil:

I'm not sure but I think Sheal:love30: is trying growing Poppies as plugs, so she might have some information on that.:snork:

For the last two years I've grown the large poppies (Papaver) from seed. I germinate them in a tray in a heated propagator, when they are large enough to handle I move them individually into six cell trays and they stay in those until I plant them out. I've not lost any yet so must be doing something right. :) I've had no success at all sowing seed directly into the ground.
