Does anyone have any photographs of a cane roof on a metal pergola? I want to put pergolas on 2 terraces, they need to be metal and I would like to have a cane pole roof on each, but I am unable to find any useful images or anyone here who knows how to build them, although cane poles/sticks in rolls are available, can anyone help?

I used to have a cane roof on a gazebo / pergola but that was made from wood. Why the metal requirement?

I require Metal because of the climate here and it has to be sunk into cement, so treated metal will last longer especially in the extreme heat and the very wet winters.

Hi Issi, welcome to GC :blue thumb:

What is the purpose of having a roof on it?

    Thank you.
To give shade and light at the same time hence cane poles as they aren't completely solid and do let some light in but also provide shade. Plus they look good!!

:) Hi Issi and welcome to the forum from me too.

We have one but the supports are of Eucalyptus poles and the top structure wooden struts. We have it covered with the cane on a roll but have now installed plexiglas under it to keep the rain off. A bar/restaurant we frequent on the beach has the round metal ones constructed of four upright ladder-like supports (for climbing plants) but I think the top structure is wood struts to a point. They make their own and dry and use cane grass for the roof.

To keep the sun and rain off oneself. ;)

Thank you Victoria, I have seen dozens of photos in magazines over the years, liking what I saw but not cutting them out or saving the magazine, and of course now cant find one! The plexiglass is a good idea but would be too hot in summer for here, I am an hour and a bit from the area known as "the frying pan of Spain!". If anyone finds a photo please send it!

Thank you so much Victoria, that is terrific, now I can explain what it is that I want!
They are predicting the coldest summer for 200 years in Spain this year, I have my fingers crossed! So far relatively mild, by Australian standards but I am bracing for 40+!

Oh I like that 'narureed' shading :) Might give that a go myself.

Issi, you can always built the metal frame, spread out the canes on top and tie them in place.

Thank you Loofah, I think that will be the way to proceed. Just need to draw up exactly what I want so the Spanish builder doesn't go off on a tangent!!

That is very popular here Loofah, especially on larger expanses. We just have 3m x 1.5m area where we have it so just lay it flat. It is very cheap here as is artificial grass which could be an alternative as a roof.
