Lots of stuff in the garden is poisonous. Most poisonous plants taste ghastly, so in practice animals (and children!) don't eat enough to do harm. Most only cause stomach upset, although a small child won't need as much toxic material as an adult to cause harm, of course.

I was brought up to wash my hands when we came in from picking Aconites in the garden, and thus I understood that some plants are dangerous. Children will come into contact with poisonous plants outside your own garden ... so best they are brought up to understand that they aren't all edible!

Apple Pips contain cyanide ... but you have to eat a heck of a lot of them to cause any harm.

The seed pods on Potatoes are poisonous ... and look just like Tomatoes (which are the same family of plants) ... and so the list goes on.

This amused me as Foxgloves are a lot more poisonous than Lupins (which are only mildly poisonous).

The RHS page about poisonous plants is worth a look

Well thanks for all the replies, I'm grateful for all the help and advice. We have decided to keep them and thanked the neighbour all the same as we are new to gardening and any help or advice is appreciated.

I will try to get some pictures up of the things we have put in, hopefully we haven't made any huge faux pas but we think it looks nice anyway.

That's 100% of the battle so ignore anyone telling you they don't like what you've done :) (whilst silently adopting any suggestions that they have and which you like the sound of :) )
