Why would I unplug my phone when I am not using it ... I won't get messages on the PT free answerphone service ...

Do you mean, mobiles? If so, I don't use one as to me they are only for emergencies ...

I think you are best to unplug your phone from the charger, when it is finished as it still drains power, but could be wrong:biggrin:

The problem is with getting rid of plastic is that we would have to start using glass again for say bottles of squash,milk,tomato/brown sauce and lots of other things that we now have in our cupboards in plastic bottles. If we go back to glass then the bottles will be heavier to carry from the shops to the car and then a few idiots will have accidents with the glass and will no doubt want to sue someone as is the norm these days.

We have had the stone age,the iron age,the bronze age etc so why not the plastic age:snork:

Not saying we should get rid of plastic. It is good stuff in the right application. Just that if it was heavily taxed to reflect its environmental impact and its use of resources, then it would only be used for stuff we actually need or really want.

Trouble with taxation is it just makes money for the government.
A plastics tax, wow,.... I can see them rubbing their hands together now.

How about a wind farm tax?
Oh I forgot, we are already paying that one in our energy bills.

Best place to site a wind farm would be in the Thames, just outside Parliament.
That one would even work when its foggy.

We should go nuclear, and use hemp instead. I think France is well on with this stuff.

Can you get a fission reaction going with hemp?:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Seriously though, I know what you mean, and I agree. There was a study a few years ago when biofuel was first hitting the mainstream headlines. Some scientists found that hemp yielded about double the ethanol that you'd get from oilseed rape or palm oil. They also found it required virtually no irrigation, will grow in soil that little else will grow in, and is more competitive than most weeds. They also found that you needed much less energy to process it to extract the ethanol, and is less vulnerable to changing weather conditions than most crops. As if that's not enough, they found that after harvest, the poor ground it had grown in was significantly improved in structure and nutrient level, and was therefore now suitable for other crops, such as food crops, where such crops could not have easily been grown before.

In short, they found it to be the perfect biofuel crop, as well as helping to tackle food shortages by bringing poor ground into use for the first time.

Strangely, the report didn't get much coverage, and quickly disappeared into obscurity. I wonder why that would be. A virtually zero maintenance crop that not only challenges oil and gas but that also empowers people in skint nations by giving them not only the chance to grow a biofuel crop, but to then bring that land into rotation for food production instead of them having to struggle and depend on others.

If you're using hemp it only seems as though things run better!

I think we already have enough wind farms in the UK.(especially in our area. SteveR will agree with the fact that you cant go anywhere around here without seeing them). We have already started seeing increases in our electricity bills which is being partly caused by having a lot of these wind farms around. Wind power by the way is the most expensive way to generate electricity per MwH. We are very quickly heading for an energy crisis, Nuclear power is the only feasible option we have to keep Britain's lights on. And we must start building building new plants yesterday.

Agree with you re nuclear - but they might build them in the Lakes!!! :hate-shocked:

Although I don't think Lambrigg wind farm looks too bad because it's very well hidden.
