Excellent John, thanks:blue thumb: Sounds like they're best left alone, for now:)

One of mine has bolted, I have nipped off the little flower bud. A lot of my red onions sets are also throwing up flower buds, which hasn't happened to me for years, must be due to the long cold spell we had.

      Hiya John.

I don't use sets anymore, because of bolting on a regular basis (for me). My 'ordinary' Onions of various varieties are doing really well at this stage. Looking like a good year:)

Cautionary note, please don't over water your onions, I know we're all tempted with this current dry spell BUT onions fair better in hot dry summers, I know not why!

        I'm about to give up!

As though I haven't had enough problems with cats and foxes, another pest has attacked my onions - Next doors kids and their football !

Not my year is it? Maybe I'll be able to salvage something, next year I'll be growing in a reinforced cage with gun turrets, electric fences, dog patrols and armed guards? :cry3:

I've given the football to the dogs, that won't last long.

Blimey Vince, you are having a run of bad luck.

I took off all the leaf supports last night, they were doing more harm than good as the bulbs swell they are touching the canes. The leafs seem quite sturdy, even though there was quite a breeze they didn't all flop over.

Mine are Red Baron too, I won't be growing them again. In the past I've found all my red onion sets have to be eaten within a few weeks of harvest, they don't store as well as the white varieties so I only grow a few anyway.

Ok not quite "Red Onions" but just as sweet, try Long Red Florence, reddish and a far superior flavour to Red Baron and I've never had one bolt.

My Father-in-Law always used to say you shouldn't either water nor weed your onions in hot, dry weather, but I always thought he was just a lazy old git.
