I've always liked the look of these with there furry, purplish leaves and so I treated myself this year to a packet of seeds. They have grown quite rapidly from seed and the leaves are much larger than I was expecting. Does anyone know what size these will reach and how large they have to be before flowering?
Unless a nice summer mine have never flowered , still have some seeds around , but totally forgot to plant it , got the seeds out some fruit I got from local store , the fruit is really acid .... your looking really good , overall is more of an ornamental variety as the one from fruit has thorns .
I've grown the thorny kind on a couple of occasions, they are a bit nasty. You seem to have the more desirable thornless variety, good for you. Mine always started to flower very late in the season, I have a hunch they are short day flowering plants. I never managed to overwinter, as at the time I only had a cool greenhouse, just frost free, I think they need a bit more than that.
Just looked up the thorny ones, they do look nasty! Interesting though. Shame they don't flower until late, I would have loved to have tried one of the Naranjillas.
Go for it, you might have better luck than me. I really need to try them again some time. I hate giving up on a plant without have some success.
I've got a spare if you would like it? It's currently stunted in a small pot. If reported I'm sure it will race away!
They are perennial, but from what Pete has said they may need a little extra warmth during winter. Checked on mine last night and I've got the first set of flower buds forming. Probably like Tree Tomatoes and Pepinos the fruits will take an age to ripen but fingers crossed, if I bring the plant in I may just get them to.
