Don't forget that in Wars Civilians usually get killed as well.....or in this case Ladybirds, Butterflies, Bees, Hoverflies and all the other friendlies.:hate-shocked:

I used an insecticide once. I had a small rose bush that was infested with greenfly. I poked about in the plant for ages to convince myself that there were no allied creatures in it before I sprayed it. Not a thing. Just greenfly. I sprayed, and I couldn't believe my eyes. The plant suddenly came alive with activity. All sorts of creatures I hadn't noticed suddenly started running for the ground. I didn't half feel guilty.

I read somewhere that aphids breed in much larger numbers and have a much shorter lifecycle than their predators, so if you use insecticide and wipe out 95% of the aphids and 95% of their predators, the aphid population will recover much, much faster than the predator population, so you're left stuck in the insecticide rut.

I've just ordered Vitax Organic 2 in 1 Pest and Disease Control after reading this article on the RHS website. I don't use nasties for the same reason stated above.

I think Provado is coming off the list of available sprays very soon,

I agree. That's the corner that the chucks will get, but I need it clear first so I can work on securing it and making it nice for them.

Sadly, there is always the potential for collateral damage, however I am more than compensating for this by ensuring that there are plenty of other friendly plants for them to visit; the infestation of blackfly on the nasturtiums in the roof troughs was immense - no wonder the plants weren't thriving, they were literally a black heaving mass of blackfly.

I've been out early doors painting a couple of fence panels before starting work at 8.30 (from the comfort of my sofa). I may do more later but I'm about to run out of fence paint so need a trip to B&Q.

They both look in lovely condition Kristen and your did it before the sun is at its fiercest. Now, a long drink for them and the same for you.

Been watering them, heavily, for a week. Came up like pulling your wellies out of a mud flat :) so hopefully not too stressed. Hope the Acer survives as its a lovely Autumn colour, not so bothered about the yew. I don't have a place for it (a pair I might have done ...) so if it survives a year it will probably go on eBay - its back-filled with compost, so should transplant more easily next time around.

                      You noticed? :heehee:
