Go for it, Zigs. If my area is anything to go by, people are keen to get hold of a gardener that works hard and knows anything at all about gardening. I gather there's quite a few about that know very little!

If I wasn't miles away, and if I wasn't currently between jobs and expecting a new and expensive addition to my family any day now, I'd hire you to come and sort out my place Zigs. But why limit yourself to garden work? I have no doubt you'll be excellent at that but you have other, rarer skills too. Why not offer hard landscaping services, building repairs etc too?

I'm still waiting for you to have to come up north to fix the crack on my house:)

TBH, I've had enough of the building game, must be one of the few jobs in the country where the customer expects you to pay for all the materials, scaffolding etc. yourself & then not pay you for another 30 days and even then quibble about every last bag of nails.

I'll take each job as it comes, like if I was working on Kristen's garden then i'd happily build him a Folly while I was there.

Haven't you fixed that crack yet? Thought I told you how to do it? :snork:

No. I think there might be a bigger issue. We've got damp inside the house on the wall, upto the height of the damp course. The outer wall has been re-pointed with ordinary cement (before I bought the place), and they've pointed over the damp course, and also I'm seeing cavities behind the new cement where its broken away in a few places. I think I need to get all the new cement out before I start, and do something about the fact that the block paved drive goes right up to the wall, and it tilts down to the wall I've found, so that when it rains, I actually have puddles against the wall.

I think there's more work than I dare attempt, and it will need tools that I don't have.

Anyway, Zigs, have you set up a Bookface page for your new freelance business yet? If you do that, then get 25 of us to 'Like' it, then you get your own friendly url instead of a massive great serial number. It also means people can share your page about. Just one extra way of get word out there. I hate Bookface, but that's where its all at these days in terms of advertising.

Not thought of that yet, doesn't it cost to have a business bookface? :)

Nope. Totally free. It only costs you set up an advert campaign. Then you get a choice of per per click-through, or pay per 'impression'. In the case of the former you are billed if someone clicks the ad. It means lots more people might see it but not click it. In the case of the latter you are billed every time it is shown on someone's page. You set the budget and you choose the target audience profile. However you don't need to even do it if you don't want. You can still set up a page, get 25 of us lot to like your page, and then you can call it something. All free, and with a bit of luck all your local buddies will like it, and their's too and so on, so that word gets round in your area all for free.

You might have noticed I sometimes share on the Redcar RNLI's posts. Same principle. I 'liked' their page, which means I get their news feed. Free to them (and me). I see an post that I like or think is interesting, so I like it or share it, then all my friends see it too. They can then either like the page, or like the post, or share it on. Either way the Redcar branch of the RNLI gets greater exposure than they otherwise would have. Same with a business.

Is it the a Facebook page you are talking about? I think that a Facebook page can work if one is very active on it which I don't think it is the case here.
In the case of Zig I think best way is to start by some locals that know him and go and ask directly to people every few weeks and leave a contact number .
ps you should also say what areas you are ready to cover.

True, but for 30 minutes effort at no cost, a Bookface page is worth having. In terms of keeping it active, based on other business's pages that is easy. Before and After/Case Study articles is one way, or even just random drivel in the usual Bookface manner. Things like 'It's summer time, we should all be outside having a barbecue' or simple tips to non-gardeners like 'Its scorchio, make sure you remember to water those containers'. Its all about getting word around. There is no substitute for actual face time, but you can't meet everyone, and more people live on Bookface these days than the real world.
