I'm proud of the fact that we have legal processes and protocols here that mean everyone can expect to be treat within certain guidelines. It means, for example, that someone who has been wrongly accused of a crime, is afforded some protection, and it means that even those that are guilty of the crime they are being punished for get a punishment that has been decided objectively. However this case is a bit different. After slaughtering an innocent man in broad daylight in a busy street in front of many witnesses, the 'accused' then actually asked to be filmed boasting about what he'd done. He didn't even leg it, he was proud of his 'achievement', and was only stopped because the coppers shot him. Something I'd do if I was an armed copper trying to arrest a loony with a machete who'd just hacked someone to death. Any trial is a formality. He was seen doing it, he admitted doing it, and was proud that he did it. Our legal structure doesn't really accommodate that scenario very well. Personally I think its a shame he only lost a couple of teeth. I hate violence in all its forms, but maybe if the prospect of jail was actually a terrifying one, just maybe people might think twice about doing anything that will land them in there. He can't be killed in case that makes him a martyr in the eyes of his twisted sick peers. He needs to go the same way as the likes of Saddam or Gadaffi. Very publicly broken and weak so that all his peers see him as the spineless weasel that he is.
I think that is the case now, Clueless. There isn't a sane, reasonable, normal person [of any Faith] who does not consider these criminals as the lowest of the low. But they're not people with the mentality to see beyond their own distorted hate filled world and anything the Civilized World punishes them with will only, to them, be an injustice and in their own minds they have already classed themselves as Martyrs. Despite all the personal opinions of what should really be done the best thing we can do is to ensure they never see the outside world again. Unfortunately, according to a Prison Officer friend of mine they will be given privileges that normal prisoners are entitled to and also there are people outside who, for whatever reasons, will also try to use the system for them.
Well, I certainly hope that he is being cared for correctly following his injuries, no matter how he sustained them. Indeed, it might be worth paying for additional treatment..... maybe from people who are well used to caring for others in pain.... someone like the wives of servicemen maybe??
I can't see the point of mental torture or winding the guy up in prison or even giving him a damn good kicking. We're civilised apparently and 7.5g of lead would end the ongoing burden this creature is on us.
We can't do that because where would it end? If its ok to execute someone for murdering someone an innocent person, is it then ok to execute someone who flips after years of physical and mental abuse by their spouse and goes too far? If that's ok, then what about someone who accidentally kills someone but through an avoidable act of stupidity? On one hand I agree. It would be so much easier if we could just dispatch people like this, and like that terrorist chap that has just recently finally been sent back to Jordan, terrorists, serial killers, paedophiles etc. But on the other hand once you open the flood gates, things can go downhill fast. The last thing we want is to regress to a state where women get executed just for making herbal drinks. I know that's an extreme example, but the point is once you make it ok for a very specific criteria, you pave the way for someone to justify that other cases meet that criteria, and then you get a legal precedent paving the way for further slippage etc. Personally, as a civilised nation, I can think of a fair punishment for terrorists who are here in the UK but claim to hate the UK. Ask them where they'd rather be, give them a small fishing cobble with enough fuel to do maybe 100 miles, some sarnies and fresh water, compass, charts, all the navigation gear they need, and just let them go. Only have the Royal Navy make sure they don't come back. In the interests of fairness, even give them coordinates to rendezvous with merchant/RN ships along the way to refuel. If they decide to just run for France, fine, that's their choice, let the French authorities decide what to do with them. If they decide to run for half way round the world, that's fine too, again their choice, again just make sure they don't land on British soil again. If the sea claims them, well, they made their own choices.
Can I wear the eye patch too? Call me Snake! I only condone my example in the precise circumstances where it is beyond any doubt, not just reasonable, that the person is guilty (video footage and bragging to witnesses for example) and in no other. I also say it safe in the knowledge that it will not happen, so maybe it's part tongue in cheek. That said, should it happen, I'd blink once at the news that he was dead and then forget about him forever.
"Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends." Who'll be the first to identify this quote? I don't think it'll be long.
