    Dear all,

Some of you may have seen my last somewhat panicky post when I had a disaster with FBB. Thankfully, over the last month almost everything has recovered and my first time gardening experiment is looking really quite lovely (if I do say so myself!).
I have one quick question because it's been puzzling me for a while; I bought some seeds by the name of 'Yankee doodle dandy dahlia' from Suttons and they are just beginning to bloom. My question is this; I have since been told that Dahlias are tuberous plants but these were definitely seeds (feathery little things). Is it a Dahlia or is that just a common name because it has similar flowers to Dahlias? Trivial I know and it makes no real odds as they are coming up lovely but it's just bugging me!

Yes you can grow Dahlias from seed. Like a lot of plants they have more than one way of regenerating themselves and Dahlias also produce tubers underground. You can dig these up for overwintering later in the autumn.

I used to grow Dahlias from seed every year, they grow fast and produce a good tuber at the end of the summer which you can store and regrow next year.
Best to pick the ones you like best for keeping, so mark them with a label when in flower.

Seed grown plants can be very variable.

I've just checked them out Lynsey, they are definitely Dahlias, half hardy perennials. They will grow as John and Pete have explained. :)

Thank you all for your responses. I'm very new to gardening so bear with me when I ask what must seem like inane questions!

As was Percy Thrower, Geoff Hamilton, Monty Don and Alan Titchmarsh: once :)
It's just that we're not privy to the questions they may have asked when they were starting out down the garden path :heehee:

Besides: think not about how much you think you don't know; consider instead how much you have learned

... and by "Now and again"
            I want to explain,
I mean NOW and AGAIN and AGAIN !!

I got some dinner plate dahlia tubers from poundland, 2 for £1. They had orange, red and yellow. They turned out awesome. The sutton ones look great but 9.99 is out of budget for me. :heehee:
