In the post today .....10,000 poppy seeds ....... No it didn't need a lorry to deliver .nor a box .... Infact the seeds fit on a fifty pence piece ... Piled up........ Cost £2.21 from nuts and cones ...... Via amazon ......but found the name in google......

Poppy seed. Is best sown in a clean seedbed in the autumn as the seed requires a period of chilling to break dormancy . Seed will germinate in autumn and following spring but better plants result from an autumn germination

I was just thinking about this earlier. My few poppies out the front are starting to produce seeds now. I've been checking them every day because its easy to miss them. The pepper pots stay green for ages, then very quickly turn brown, open, and shed their seeds, so unless you catch them just right, you miss them.

Mine will spend some time in my freezer before sowing in a tray and then into my heated propagator.

Clueless, I picked the poppy heads while they were still green last year and put them on a sunny windowsill, they soon dry out and you will hear if they're ready by giving the pod a shake, they will rattle. :)

I missed the start of the thread due to being out of the UK but I think it's a brilliant and appropriate idea and I'll be putting it forward for incorporation in our village community wild life garden.

          Hi
Today I have found out that a separate organisation is planning a similar exercise to us with the planting of poppy seed
I'm planning on having a chat with him tomorrow
How is everyone getting on with gaining permission from land owners

            Just a refresh
Would be great to hear any updates .... Permission from landowners .. Etc

            Hi everyone

100 years ago next year is the anniversary of the first world war and every year we commerurate the loss of personnel from the armed forces with poppy day..... Well how about this for an idea.? Sow poppy seed this year in the hedgerows and verges with the permission of the landowners and next year the country will be covered in poppies .... And why not grow a poppy in your garden ............................A truly fitting tribute..... ... It's an idea that's been bounding around for about 18 months now and I was timely reminded of the idea earlier today on a radio station.

It would be great to hear your comments

I think its all still on Doug, but I think I suspect its gone a bit quiet simply down to the hot weather. Everyone is either outside or two hot and tired to do much:)

My update, not much to report, but I've started to collect seeds of my poppies as they ripen, and have earmarked the front garden for this project. I've also noticed, perhaps because I'm more mindful of it since I became aware of this plan, that lots of people round my way already have displays of our native poppies in their gardens. Maybe word is out. I haven't approached anyone yet, apart from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, mostly because I've been a bit busy, and partly because I'm still working on the best way to ask.

There is two maybe three separate organisations that are all trying to do similar things with poppies.... One of them has a garden show on you tube and has quite a following the other that I no about is the horticultural trades association who are planning a massive campaign .... They are hoping to supply 60,000 packets of seeds to schools across the uk and 60,000 packets of seeds to garden centres who are members of the HTA for them to give away..............I believe if this campaign is going to be really successful we might have to team up and work alongside these groups under one banner ...... Lots of thing need to be discussed ........ As we are not doing it for profit ...............
Does anyone have any major objections for me to make enquiries along this pathway ?

Anything can and should be considered ........
Would genuinely like everyone's opinion .........

I would like to comment on the above on behalf of the Webmaster and Administrators.

The Webmaster and all the Administrators personally admire and support the recognition of the Centenary of what is known as the Great War. We also believe in the recognition of the un-repayable debt that we owe to all those who served in the Armed Forces in the Great War, World War II, and all the Wars since then.
My understanding of the progression of this Thread, after the mixing and proposing of many enthusiastic ideas, was the agreement that individual members would/could approach their Local Authorities and Organisations to encourage them to recognise the Centenary of the 1914-1918 War by the sowing of Poppy seeds, creating other events, the sowing of the individual members personal stock of Poppy seeds in their own gardens and other areas [with the permission of the owners].
As I said, the Webmaster and all of the Administrators personally fully support the idea of the recognition of the Centenary of the Great War and those who served in the Armed Forces then and after. But, after much thought and discussion, for legal reasons we cannot officially support the "uncontrolled" sowing of Poppy seeds by individual members.
The main player in the recognising the Centenary will of course be the British Legion and it's Associated Organisations and the main thrust of the organising will come from them. They, no doubt, will not be slow in contacting the Local Authorities and other organisations to ensure a proper recognition of the Centenary. The HTA and other commercially interested organisations will, I'm sure, for patriotic and other reasons, want to participate in recognising the Centenary but the real recognised main organiser will be the British Legion. We cannot see any advantage therefore in "teaming up" with other organisations such as the HTA in order recognise the event.
Gardeners Corner is renowned for it's openness, willingness to support good causes, and it's members [to my joy] are always willing to help where ever and when ever they can. So I think it's only fair that we recognise that the British Legion is the main player and organiser of the recognition of the Centenary and don't get diverted by "fringe" organisations wanting to participate while continuing to carry out the plan to sow Poppy seeds in our own gardens and, with the permission of the Land Owners, other areas . I'm sure we will all help and assist the British Legion and it's associated organisations in any way we can and all contribute what we can financially in recognition of that un-repayable debt.

Just for clarity, because I'm easily confused, what are you going to inform the HTA and British Legion of?
