Taking a side step to this thread. How many of you use the air con in the car instead of opening the windows? I don't know how to turn mine on, I've never felt the need to use it as I'd rather have the windows down. :)

No aircon. Drive with the lid off if it's 65F or over and not raining,

Hmmm ... I have a convertible and have the roof down and the a/c on some days ... it's difficult to explain to someone if you don't live in a hot country ..

We have 5 meter ceilings in the house and our fans are about 4 meters up, except the kitchen where we have a normal height ceiling but there is a/c if required in the kitchen/dining and bedrooms, not in the living room. As Pete mentioned above, like in Italy we have all our windows closed and shutters down in the heat of the day, open all night.

Our threshhold for putting the a/c on in the house is 30c outdoor temp.

The long running aircon vs open windows debate was solved a few years ago with a fairly in depth formal study. On average, below 50mph it is better to open the windows, above 50mph the drag puts more strain on the engine (and therefore your fuel economy) than the aircon compressor, so aircon is best.

All totally irrelevant in my case, as the aircon in my car is bust.

Driving above 50mph on this island is a rare occurrence with no dual carriageways Clueless, so my air con remains redundant. :)

That study was done to try and solve the puzzle of whether it's more fuel efficient to use aircon or have the windows open.

You need to add the comfort value to that factor. The aircon will actually lower the temperature in the car and keep it more comfortable. There is a cooling effect when the windows are open but there can be problems. If you have the windows open because of fuel efficiency at lower speeds you come up against the problem of driving conditions affecting comfort and temperament.

At the worst end you have the 'driving in heavy traffic' syndrome. The low speed and the stop/start problems done give much, or any, throughput of air if the windows are open. Therefore you still get too hot and, with a lot of people, being too hot and in poor traffic conditions causes frustration and tempers to rise. This tends to have a knock on effect when you arrive home afterwards (or at work).

Studies have shown that this has a larger deleterious effect on work and homelife than people thought. Therefore the conclusion was that there is only a small 'driving condition gap' in the centre of the scale where it may be no worse to the mental state to have the windows open.

Getting back to the original topic :), the reason the houses in hotter climates have the shutters on the outside is because they stop the direct heat of the sun reaching the house. Drawing the curtains when the sun is on the house works to a certain degree but the heat has already penetrated the windows and gets trapped to a certain degree behind the curtains. Therefore it can be better to open the windows behind the curtains if there is sufficient breeze to draw that trapped air out.

fc is, naturally, correct :blue thumb:.

If you are able to afford it, then it's a no brainer. :) The modern heat exchange airconditioners are much more efficient than the old ones but, as with a lot of things nowadays, they aren't built as sturdily as the older types.

I remember when central heating was only a future hope for most people (although the Romans had it :heehee:) but is now extremely common. Aircon will become more common if we continue to have hotter periods.

How can you justify fitting aircon in the UK.
We have been waiting 7 yrs for the recent heatwave.

I had my car aircon regassed in May., I've used it about five times since.
Either journeys are too short to get the benefit, especially when the car has been standing in full sun, or its not hot enough to warrant it.
I'd only ever use it on motorways where the traffic and air noise is deafening with the windows open.

We only put ours on, be it the house or car, only when we feel it necessary and comfortable to us. In the bedroom it has been only a dozen times this year, the kitchen slightly more. Comfort is a priority in our 'old age' irrespective of the cost ... :old:

Some of the modern cars need the aircon on even in the winter. A friend bought a new car and took it back because, even with the fan on demist, the screen was staying misty. They told him that the aircon needs to be switched on - and his screen cleared immediately. It doesn't need to be set on cold to do that.

With my car, even when it has been 40C inside the car, the aircon cools it down within a mile. :blue thumb:

Victoria, I agree with you :dbgrtmb:. We have aircon in the bedroom and it's used quite often to cool it down to a comfortable temperature. It has a 'Sleep' setting which takes it down to the preset temperature and then, after a preset period of time, lets the temperature gradually rise by 2 degrees before switching of. The 'Sleep' setting is, virtually, silent.

Pete, I suppose it's a matter of priorities. :noidea:
We don't smoke or drink and use the money we have 'saved' for comfort and holidays. I'm amazed at how much some of our friends spend each year on booze and fags, but they're happy to do that instead of having good holidays.

In the recent hot weather, I've been tempted to see if I can fix in the aircon in Gothilda, but I knew that doing so would bring an immediate end to summer, so I've left it. Gotty is built for a Swedish winter. That means she doesn't take much heating. Unfortunately it also means she gets quite toasty in the summer. Still, that's nothing that can't be solved by taking ones shoes and socks off and driving in bare feet.

Hmmm, driving barefoot ... I have done so since 1965 (yes, that is 1965) ...

There are discussions on the forums here in Portugal as to whether it is legal or not ... apparently it 'may' be illegal to drive in flip flops ... :dunno: ... but I shall continue to drive bare footed and face the consequences (and fines) should I get caught 'bare footed' ...
                                :heehee:
