I have overwintering cabbages growing in my veg plot at the moment and wondered what else I could sow or plant at this time of the year, either for later on this year or for next spring. I have some lettuce plants and radish and beetroot seeds, though it’s a bit late, according to the packets they should grow before winter comes.

With a new house and garden I haven’t had much time to plan anything so suggestions would be very welcome.

I think it would be worth sowing a few lines of spinach, chard and leaf beet. They should germinate quickly in this warm damp, and get well established before autumn. They might get very miserable over the winter but they'll reward you with plenty of leaf in early spring.
    You could also try parsley.

Purple sprouting broccoli, Lambs lettuce, Mizuna, Land Cress, Japanese onions & a first or second early potato.

Assuming you like it, it's worth reserving a spot for Garlic planting, around early October. These will be ready for harvesting next June/July:blue thumb:

The main thing is that my veg plot is not so very big that I can afford to grow large crops or crops that need a large space.
I’m not a lover of spinach but a bit of chard might be an idea – I have grown chard in the past, so, yes, that’s a possibility.
Parsley, I am growing in pots – if only I can find the right position (as I did some years back) it grows like a perennial!
I’d forgotten Purple sprouting broccoli, so yes. I’ve never tried Lamb’s Lettuce, Mizuma, or Land Cress, so will look into those. I’ve grown Japanese onions but I need to make sure that the plot is not too full when spring sowing and planting comes around, so perhaps a row.
I’ve decided, because of the size of the plot and the cheapness of potatoes not to grow them in the coming year, but thanks.
Over-wintering broad beans I do intend to grow.
I love garlic! I always used to grow garlic on my allotment but I’d forgotten it – thanks for the reminder – that I will grow, definitely!
Does anyone know if there is a variety of pea that can be planted in the coming months and will over-winter? I thought I’d read of some a little while ago but maybe I was dreaming!
        Thanks for your ideas.

Turnip "Purple Top Milan" would be ok too I think . They seem to grow quick and reliably. Apparently you eat the tops upto about 10cm for greens as well and according to the net they taste very nice. Looking forward to trying mine they are about 1/2 tennis ball size at the moment and I just sowed a second row which is up very quickly

I grew "Purple Top Milan" many years ago, on the allotment I had then, but I've never tried growing them since. At the moment, I haven't got a lot of room, until the beans, tomatoes, and cabbages are finished so it depends on when they have to be sown.

        Thanks for the idea!
