As my broad beans and peas have been a disaster (got a grand total of 14 beans, and no peas!) I am looking to turn the area that I have had occupied by them over to something that will be productive over the winter, and make me feel a wee bit better come harvest time next spring!

Now, I believe that garlic is one that is overwintered, as are some onions, leeks, parsnips etc?

Given that the area is approx 10ft x 3ft, its probably a bit on the big side to be just garlic (but open to be corrected on that), so I was wondering what else I could/should plant there. The border concerned is a bit on the shady side.

Leaf beet keeps going right through winter, and gives a nice splash of colour when not much else is happening.

Does it germinate quite quickly? I'm now thinking of the other border on the sunny side, which will be pretty much devoid of stuff from November onward - or is that too late to sow leaf beet?

Meant to say, although it is leaf beet, it is almost always incorrectly named chard (chard is boring white and green I think and grows larger than leaf beet). Look out for 'Chard, Bright Lights' or 'Rainbow Chard'.

You could go for Land Cress, Lambs Lettuce & Mizuna, they crop well over winter.

I got Rainbow Chard at the moment.

Would they be happy on the shady side, or would they want the sunnier side (for all the sun we get over winter)?

What about swede for the shadier border?
