So the other week I found a small wasp in my hallway, I just let it out and thought nothing else of it. Then a few days later while friends were round there was another small one flying round the living room, again we let it out and thought nothing of it. but just now as I'm sitting down to eat there is another small one bussing around the room so I just give it a blast with raid and carried on eating, not 3 minutes later there is another buzzing round the room (its definitely not the one from 3 minutes ago she is curled up dead on the windowsill)

I don't know what to do. weather I should look for where they are coming in. or put up with it in the hope that any nest will die off soon enough over winter. or nip the problem in the bud and get someone called ASAP.

Can I just add that I'm massively afraid of wasps. so much so that if we did descover a nest id have to move out until it was gone.

Are there any air vents that they're using to come in? At our first house, they got in via the duct for the hob extractor and got into my kitchen. They always seem to be looking for nooks and crannies. I'm the same, I hate wasps, they bloody hurt when they sting :runforhills:

Just as well you don't live in my house. We had a wasp bike the size of a big football in our garage. The buzzing noise from it was deafening when it was warm and sunny. No big deal, just waited until night time and the wasps were tucked up in bed and then blasted the entrance to the nest with wasp killing foam...sorted. I'd just keep the Raid handy unless you can find out where the nest is. Husband is HIGHLY allergic and has ended up in hospital 3 times with serious anaphylactic shock so it's left to yours truly to deal with them. It would cost a fortune to get the council/ pest control out every time to deal with the b things. Unless they are nesting in/close to the house we just let them get on with it!

there are some vents but I don't think it would be possible for them to get in there (maybe it would though). I was stung on my foot 2 years ago walking on the grass barefoot, ive never gone on the grass without anything on my feet since. and I got stung yesterday while looking around my garden. we have had a wasp nest in our attic about 5 years back, Im guessing it was quite large because of the amount there were coming in and going out of the roof outside. but I heard no buzzing and didn't see it for myself. I remember then every morning I would wake up with them buzzing around my head, they were getting in through the hatch to the attic which wouldn't shut properly. that's probably why im so scared of them.

I agree, if you are that scared of them and it sounds like there is a nest nearby, then phone the Council.

I would not suggest to put -up -with- it- in- the- hope because, albeit they may go quiet in the winter, they will come back in full shape in the summer.

It's amazing how small a gap they can get into, as our vent wasn't that big but it was definitely through that they got in, as one morning I saw them. I hate wasps, stung twice and had a nest in the attic when I was little (the nests are amazing though, like papier mâché!)

What will you cover it with? Bearing in mind that wasps eat their way through paper if its blocking them from getting to where they want to be.

I'm afraid I'm not going to help your fears Alan, my dappy dog was rushed the vets this week after, I suspect, swallowing a wasp. She went into anaphylactic shock , tongue so swollen she was struggling to breathe, her windpipe was protruding over her ribcage, I have never been so scared in my life, thank god I live so close to the vet.

I have to say I didn't see her do it, she has been stalking bees all summer with no problems but in the last week the bee numbers have dropped and having not seen a wasp all summer, my garden is now full of them!

I suspect if you had a nest you would see higher numbers in the house, I just think you could have a larger number generally about, like I have and some are finding their way into your house.

that must have been so frightening Yvonne, is she ok?

we have an awful lot of wasps here too, they're becoming a real nuisance coming into the kitchen constantly...they seem to have taken a shine to me for some reason, i dont know why i havn't been wearing any perfume or anything like that for fear of attracting them  wasps also give me the hebe-jebe's...it creeps me out how you cant shoo them away from you...they just keep coming after you :help: the hives not in our garden so no idea where it might be...i have to ask as awful as it sounds is there anything i can do to check there numbers a bit without harming the bee's/hoverflies ect ? they really are becoming a problem!

Thanks Ellen & Honeybunny - She is much better now, the earlier you get treatment, man or beast, the sooner you recover. In a dog, the symptoms were excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, coughing noise and swollen tongue and cheeks. It was only when we got to the vets, he pointed out her windpipe was ballooning. She still has a small swelling in the throat which is solid but getting smaller.

I don't want to be dramatic about this, I post this so other dog owners understand the early signs because, it wasn't until she started a choking cough that I looked in her mouth and saw her huge blue tongue that I realised what was happening. If I had walked her and then left for work as I sometimes do, I could have come back to a dead dog.

I dearly hope my little Megan has 9 lives, because I sense she is going to need them!
