I drove to the RSPB Nature Reserve at South Stack, Holyhead in Anglesey today and then drove back through the Welsh Mountains which to my surprise was an all round journey of 254 miles!! The weather in Wales was not good, low clouds, drizzle and wet and low light but it was nice to get out and the scenery was fantastic. Having said that there were very few birds at South Stack.....probably gone home due to the weather.:heehee:

The South Stack Light House from the RSPB Viewing room at Ellins Tower perched on the cliffs.

There's a really steep boulder path from Ellins Tower up to the point where you can join the road to get to the path that will take you to the Light House. The path is a 420 step steep path down from the cliffs to the Light House [which means 420 steps back:hate-shocked:;) So I used the excuse that I had only come to see the birds and could get good views from the cliffs:heehee:
But the rest of the scenery was really impressive despite the low cloud, low light and rain. Oh, and they need to fix the light in the top of the Light House as it kept going on and off!:dunno::snork:

This is the view from the RSPB car park. The Gorse and Heather colours were just tremendous.

I'll follow up with pics of Holyhead Harbour and the trip back through the Welsh Mountains.

I was there a month or so back.. we went on North stack.. pretty treacherous leaning over the cliff face, but good fun nevertheless.

        Nice pics!

Nice post Armandii ! We are going to Anglesey over the bank holiday weekend with the family camping at Treardurr Bay just 2 miles south of the south stack. I thought an afternoon out at a lighthouse was just the thing for the grand kids . But I think 420 steps would start a huge whinge fest going  So we will go to Rhosneigr beach and see if William and Kate will ask us in for a cup of tea !

:wow: Great pictures Armandii, my kind of scenery. In the first picture of the rocks the base looks like honeycomb. :)

Brilliant colours:blue thumb:, should be good for bird life in January, you need to do another trip then (just for us).
We have been to Anglesey once to visit distant relatives but never got to Holyhead or the Stack.

Thanks, Strong. I must admit I was disappointed with the lack of birds there but the view made up for it.

Hmmmmmm, I am thinking of going back next year in the prime time for the birds but I'm not sure about January :hate-shocked::heehee:, as they reckon the Winter there is the quiet time.:dunno: According the RSPB the breeding time starts in Spring and most of the interesting birds are there up to mid-July.:snork: This first trip was purely to reconnoitre the place and also enjoy the trip back through the Welsh Mountains even though the weather was wet and grey.

I'm often at South stack. A lovely place. Especially when it's blowing a gale. The walk at the cliff edge can be nice. Great place for heather too. Best buzz for me is seeing the young peregrines stretching their wings, beautiful.
The pic is from my garden. If you zoom in you can see the light from south stack lighthouse. It took a few shots to get it timing 9 seconds between each flash.

Gaz do you live on the North coast of Llyn Peninsula or actually in Anglesey? (just trying to Geographically position myself)

I was trying to work out the position as well Steve ! Gaz , I can't actually see the light but was it taken from around Nefyn ? We may have a walk along the cliff , and miss the 420 steps to the lighthouse !

Hi guys, yes a very scenic area, and lots of opportunities with camera, in between the Nantlle valley and the coast. Basically if I stand in the back garden I see Snowdon and the Nantlle ridge, if I stand in the front I see Anglesey at 2 o'clock and Pen Llyn at 10 o'clock. We are quite high and exposed and gardening can be a challenge sometimes! Today it's blowing a gale!!!
I have cropped into the pic a bit so you should be able to see better. I had to wait for the light to fade to get the lighthouse so it's a bit grainy when cropped.

Just as an aside, does anyone know of a Bay on the Welsh Coast called the "Devil's Mouth"??? I went there a long time ago and remember it being a very large sandy bay with horns of land either side making it into a wind tunnel:hate-shocked:, and the amount of different kinds of flotsam and jetsam washed up was amazing. The trouble is I want to go back there for a photo trip but can't remember exactly where it is.:dunno::snork:
