I think its safe to say that this year has been a better year than last year? Today's haul:

    IMAG0476.jpg

And when added to the harvest from the past couple of days

    IMAG0477.jpg IMAG0477.jpg

Yes, that is a slow cooker crock pot at the back FULL of Maskotkas! :help:

A bag has just gone off to next door, another bag is heading to brother-in-law's in the morning, and as I type the first of a few batches of tomato soup is bubbling away gently on the cooker, which will be bagged and frozen later on :blue thumb:

Anyone got a good tomato based curry sauce recipe? Thinking of making up a huge batch of curry sauce which can be frozen and then defrosted to add whichever meat we want during the winter?

Wow FC. That's a very successful yield you have there. I hope someone comes up with a curry based tom sauce. Like the sound of that...:blue thumb:

I just looked for a vid about prepping toms for freezing, but they weren't very good.

What I do is put them in boiling water for 30 secs, then into cold.

That makes the skins easy to remove, then squash them over a sieve above a bowl & hoik out as many of the seeds as possible, you only want to freeze the flesh, seeds can go bitter in the freezer.

Lob or save the seeds, in the bowl you'll have some nice tomato juice to drink :)

I've saved some of the Marmande seeds today, from the best fruits, before they went into the soup; I didn't add any water to the jar though - was there any further opinion on whether adding water was the right thing to do or not?

I've also just remembered that I have around 2kg of diced beef in the freezer, so I can also make up some beef stew/pie filling with the toms and freeze that.

Shimsham......I think it's probably down to growing conditions, the weather tends to have a great effect on tomato growing, some years good, others bad. :)

I use this recipe for Indian style Tomato chutney - also makes an excellent curry sauce base once blended.

What a great recipe link Nick. I may have to scale down the chilli input but the rest of the ingredients look top notch. I can't wait for Autumn when my big tomtoes from Bulgaria, Fuerteventura and Turkey will be ripe and ready for harvesting. This looks the business..:blue thumb: and it was fun reading the comments from people who have made it too,
                :ThankYou:

Gosh! What a lot of tomatoes you've got! FC :blue thumb:

I don't have a big freezer so I don't freeze tomatoes but bottle them.

Do what Zigs said in post #1263 to take the skin of the tomatoes. Then cut them up in chunks and stuff the pieces in bottles with their juice.
                  image.jpg

Wipe the lips of the bottles clean with some kitchen towels. Put a couple of inches of water in a big saucepan, place the bottles in together with the lid but DO NOT SCREW THEM ON. Cover saucepan with lid and bring to the boil. Once the water has boiled, reduce to medium heat and carry on for 20-30 minutes.
                  image.jpg

As soon as you've finished cooking, take the bottles out with the help of a tea towel and screw the lids on tight.
                  image.jpg

Once the bottles are cooled, date them and store away somewhere dark and cool. They will last till next summer. We've only just finished the final bottle from last year.

Wow, what a great post Hsuh. I do love it when someone shows me how to preserve a harvest instead of seeing them rot or go to waste,

Thanks @HsuH :) - that is ideal! That gives me a load of flexibility for their later use (thinking stews/curries/soups/bolognese etc)

                      Cheers :)

Hello peeps, still waiting for my tomatoes to turn red....but my tomato plants are now being attacked by a grey powdery mould. I don't know why its just started or how to stop it. Any thoughts on what I should do? I've already tried cutting the bits off which are mouldy but it just seems to spread!
