What do we reckon? The Spaniards are in a moody with us about Gibraltar, again.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23738651

Regardless of the politics of who should control it, the fact is it is, currently, British. Should we even care that Spain is playing games again over it? If Spain wants to close the border, can't we just have the navy supplier it by sea, or is that a too simplistic view? Can't our government be equally awkward back? Making it harder for British holiday makers to spend their money there, or for Spaniards to come into Britain?

I just think its silly that such petty disputes happen on a scale like this. You'd almost think the respective governments had nothing better to do with themselves.

I think it's just a desparate political stunt to take the Spanish public's attention off their dire economy and unemployment figures.:coffee::snork: I don't think it will work to drag the attention away from the Spanish Government's failure to deal with the problem.:dunno:

And that Argentina have jumped on it and will "join forces" with Spain? What ever happened to democracy?! The people of Gibraltar were given the vote, and overwhelmingly voted British control over Spanish. Spaniards were part of that vote, and Spaniards on the mainland have also expressed their opinion that it should remain as it is. Spain can ill-afford to alienate a country that brings so much to their ailing economy by way of tourism and all the ex-pats buying homes and buying products.

Not going into the politics but what struck me watching the news footage was, they were dropping the blocks into the water to create an artificial reef, how close to the shore they appeared. Surely fishing boats should not be allowed to trawl that close to land.

I don't think its the first time the Spanish fishermen have created a stink. What is so good about that stretch of water anyway? Launching from either side of Gibraltar, they have easy access to the Med and the Atlantic. Is that not enough? The Med is so full of fish you can just stand on the side of any harbour or boat and look down and there they are. They have all that sea, and they whine about a little bit around Gibraltar.

I can only pass the comment that the Spanish seem to have a history of wanting "All the fish in the sea"

I got the feeling when I first heard it that there would be some sort of financial driver to the whole thing - Spain is apparently skinter than a skint man in a skint town (did you see the Top Gear filmed there recently? Bit of an eye opener!)

So surely not the best time to upset their most lucrative resource, British tourists.

You would think not - but maybe they were hoping for some kind of pay-off to make them go away :dunno:

Not really sure what this is all about, we cant stop them fishing in UK waters so why would a small bit of the open sewer, often called the Med, be a big problem?

The EU want to run everything, so why are they not rushing to sort this one out.

I bet if we stopped importing Spanish produce the EU would step in and point out we were out of line and fine the UK immediately.
We would then "jump", pay the fine, plus compensation to Spain.

As far as I'm concerned, its just Spain doing their usual gesturing regarding Gib, they have done so periodically for years, its something to do in order to stir up the masses and get them behind the government when they are not doing that well in other areas.

And exactly the same with our current government, so I fully expect a real escalation of this.
