I have two smart-looking water butts on the front of the house. These have a hosepipe connected to the bottom tap which trail along a hedge and then fill a pair of IBCs (1,000L container on a pallet, about £20 each), which are conveniently at a slightly lower level. The two IBCs are linked by hose so that they siphon to maintain their level. The water butts [by the house] overflow into the original drains (more on that below), and in winter I route the tap direct into the drain and leave it open so that the water butt is empty and doesn't freeze

Those two IBCs are near an area where I need water, and they are in turn linked (same siphon principle) to the water butts by the greenhouses - one a conventional barrel type, the other a large circular corrugated one which is the main one I use as, with an open top, I can "dunk" a watering can to fill it "instantly" rather than standing waiting for the tap to run ... Conveniently the two IBCs and the two greenhouse water butts are at the same level.

I have a further 8 IBCs which fill from the barn gutters, and 3 more not currently linked to anything.

We are replacing the old septic tank with a new system, and once the old septic tank is decommissions all the house downpipes will be rerouted to empty into that (except one downpipe which already routes into the pond). At best I think the old septic tank will be 5,000L, but probably smaller. We will pump from that onto the garden. The outfall from the new system will also be clean enough for irrigation, so all water going through the house will be recycled for irrigation.

We had thought about installing a large above ground circular corrugated iron water tank (looks like a stubby grain silo), but we are holding off on that until we see how effective the other measures are.

Don't forget to check your local council, periodically there are sponsored deals going on, often for bother water butts and compost bins :)

Recommend putting a hose on the tap, into the drain, in Winter too. If we get a really cold run of nights the water freezing will be enough to burst a water butt :(
