Only realised how pretty the mint moth is when I took this close up photo of it
    image.jpg

We went out for a walk near our house, and come across a field of wheat that is nearly ready for harvesting, with lots of butterflies fluttering about. We managed to catch this peacock and speckled wood and, thanks to the high zoom on the camera, we didn't need to trample on the farmer's crops.

        A couple from the weekend.

Not sure what this will turn into:

        A 24 spot I think:

        A 7 spot: 20130815_174123.jpg

        And the stand off: 20130815_192947.jpg

It will turn into large cabbage white. Nasturtium is one of their favourite food.

Oh good, I've got plenty of Nasturtiums. They should be happy.

not sure what these fellas are going to grow into caterpillar 003.JPG
... but I know they will have sweet-smelling breath, as that is a fennel (bronze) that they are munching on!

Hello @Sian in Belgium, do you have swallowtail butterflies where you are? The caterpillar in your photos looks like a swallowtail lava to me. If so, I really envy you since I would very much like to see one in the wild.

Hi HsuH. Yes, I have seen swallowtails earlier in the summer, but not for a few weeks now.

For me they are fantastic butterflies, along with the hawk moths. I get excited every time I see them. A bit like the crested grebe, or red kite.... :dancy:

I went outside this evening at 8.35pm to look for the ISS flying over but it was dusk and a bit cloudy. A s I stood there, I heard a quiet droning close by. I looked to my left at the wall basket full on frilly double and single white petunias and there were 4 Humming bird Hawk moths all flying in and out of the flowers !
I will look again tomorrow night and try and remember to take a flash piccie of them,
                      Jenny
the petunias' perfume was very strong in the balmy evening air tonight.

Good luck with a pic Jenny.

A female Sparrow hawk turned upon the back fence this afternoon and stayed there (in the wind)for about five minutes.

Lovely picture. We get a sparrow hawk visiting our garden occasionally but it's never that obliging! It either flashes past on a reconnaissance mission or grabs something and then takes it away before we get chance to get the camera.
