Tomato Seed swap 2013

Hi Tomatophiles,
I acknowledge and appreciate the General Seedswap project organised by Pamsdish and think it's a great way to share the good things in our garden. However, I would like you to consider the merits of an exclusive Tomato Seedswap. I am enjoying the input you are all contributing to the Tomato threads this season and I'm sure the knowledge and advice will benefit all of us.
Anyone like to discuss ?

I have some different varieties in the seed swap I could let you have some of to start you off, Penny in Ontario sent them and the parcel disappeared before they were added in.

On the whole, it's a good idea. The only flaw I can see is that quite a few of us grow hybrids. For instance, in a pack of 'Sungold', there are only 10 seeds, and I would use all of these. Of course, I don't only grow hybrids, and I would be more than happy to make a contribution

As an aside, I do have something in the pipeline, but I don't want to make any promises. More on that if it transpires

 

I think that it's a good idea as tomato seeds are just about all I'm interested in and it could be organised in way that avoided a parcel doing the rounds, possibly with a single co-ordinator who would be sent an SAE together with any previous agreed (on here) donations of saved seeds to enclose whatever has previously been agreed they desire on here and post them back, so all done at once and for the cost of 2 x 2nd class stamps.

There's a huge list of varieties listed on the tomato thread and tomato seed saving is really easy.

 

I've borrowed JWK's list from the tomato thread and will edit out all the F1 varieties when a get a few minutes to spare

You have to take into account cross-pollination of plants as well. Unless each variety has been grown in isolation the seeds aren't likely to come true from the parent plant.

 

@Freddy , have you ever grown 2nd generation Sungolds? I wonder how different they would be,

All I know is Sheal, Angelina's Bulgarian giants are pretty huge . The taste is yet to be ascertained,

No, I've not.
I would imagine that a lot would depend on what it was crossed with. I think I might have some to spare though, as I may have bought more than I needed, but I'd have to check

 

One tomato has loads of seeds in it and I'm sure there will be enough to go round FC. I have learnt what generous gardeners you all are on GC and I'm confident that generosity would extend to a Tom seed swap as well,

I think Scrungees idea for a central bank for tomatoes,is great, most of us only have room for a few varieties, so would only be looking for a few of selected varieties, as you say jenny , loads of seeds per tomato.
It will have to be decided soon as time for saving is getting shorter.

 

Some varieties have yet to ripen Pam. I have Turkish and Fuerteventura and Angelina's Bulgarians all outdoors and none has ripened yet,
