2013 Onion Growing Challenge

    I noticed that one of the Kelsaes that I planted in my 'regular' onion bed has split into at least 6 segments. Still perfectly usable, but weird eh? I'm glad to report no further losses, but I'm still nervous....

      I might get a 1KG one yet, 2nd planted ones not looking too bad but coming to an end, 3rd planted ones aren't going to come to much but on a par with shop bought. A lesson learned this year........ SHOOT the local foxes and felines OR invest in some heavy duty protection, I'll be going for the latter next year!

        Measured mine tonight, still only 20" so I'm pretty sure they have finished growing.

        Must be time to start eating them, I'll pull up one of the smaller ones first, maybe at the weekend.

        What's the best way to eat these, are they nice raw like in a salad?

        I'm going to do the same, start using up the smaller ones. The one I've used already was quite 'fleshy' and quite mild, but maybe if it's smaller it will be stronger? Anyway, mine was fine in salad:blue thumb:

        Mines just started growing again....up to just over 13 inches now:heehee:....the rest are just about done now....looking forward to some beer battered onion rings:dbgrtmb:

                Sorry to digress.
                @Vince kindly sent me some 'Long Red Florence' seed at sowing time, herewith a pic...

                I've tried a bit and must say it has a really good flavour, and it's shape makes it easy to slice up. A word of caution, it is rather strong :)

                  I just knew you'd like them Freddy....... Strong? I've always found them rather sweet and delicious!

                  Happy to report that my new Onion Bed is White Rot free, pulled 3 of my Kelsae's today...... Now if I can just get it FOX, CAT and FOOTBALL free, I may be onto a giant next year?

                  A few weeks time and start all over again getting the bed fed and preparing for next year, don't time fly?

                      Tried one of the smaller ones today, weighing in at 1.46 Kg (3lb 3.5oz) and a girth of 18":

                      It's texture was a little soft, hopefully they harden up once harvested and left to mature. It's taste was OK, I would have hoped it to be a bit more fiery, maybe that will come too.

                      So two slices was enough for our cheese sarnies for lunch, at that rate one onion will last us a couple of weeks! Will definitely be storing some for use over winter then :)

                          That looks rather nice:) It looks fairly well ripened. I've been thinking I may well dig mine up pretty soon, considering it's been quite dry for a while now. I measured my biggest one the other day, and it had swelled a bit, but only by 1/4", so maybe around 4.5lbs?

                            It's worth taking one of the smaller ones Freddy just to see how it tastes. The foliage on mine is starting to go brown so I'm sure mine won't grow any more. The Johnson's leaflet suggests another light dressing of Potash might help, I'll do that today:
