I've only got "volunteer" tomatoes growing in the garden this year, so no idea what variety they may have once been :heehee: But, I *can* say they are hardy little things because they have had no help or encouragement from me and nature has nurtured them to almost ripeness (clever thing our Mother Nature, huh!? ;) )

So, I think I'm saying: I will journey with my volunteer tomatoes until such point that I can garner seeds and I'm happy to include my "mystery" toms in the swap ... go on, be a devil and take a chance - you know you want to :loll:

I've got one cheeky wee blighter, that I think began as a side shoot that I whipped off a maskotka plant - its stuck its feet down between a couple of slabs on the patio, and has gotten itself comfortable enough to produce a wee truss - I haven't the heart to whip it out, so it can remain for as long as it likes.

        Hiya Jenny:)

I popped into a local G/C earlier, and I was able to pick up a few packs of tomato seed for 50p a pack. I will donate most of these to the swap:blue thumb: These include 'Sungold', 'Gardeners Delight' and 'Country Taste'.

            I can/will save

Phils Fantastic, Omars Lebanese, German Red Strawberry, Koralik, Minibel, Red Robin, Vilma, and 'Brasero'.

I grew Brasero for years and after the last seed supplier discontinued stocking them, I phoned them and got the last of their stock FOC together with the advice it was non-F1 so I could seed save and continue growing it, which I have done for many, many years. I was not mistaken with the variety as I had empty seed packets from the previous year - never chuck them out until then crop has proved successful and you've acquired some more.

So I was surprised when I saw this http://www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk/Vegetable-Seeds-1/Cherry_2/Tomato-Brasero-F1-Seeds.html#.UiOA7xVwZjo as my 'Brasero' are a reliable bush salad tomato and nothing like a "trailing cherry tomato". This is what mine look like:
            brasero.jpg

I also have a 'mystery tomato,' a cordon tom which last year didn't get hit by blight. It's really important that people pursue growing these as that's how new varieties develop. Oh to have a new variety of tomato named after me!

I'll probably list a few more after a trawl through my saved seeds boxes.

              Hiya @Scrungee :)

I'd be interested in a couple of 'Phils Fantastic', but more of that when/if the seed becomes available. I always like to try a few new varieties each year, but space is limited. Are they any good outdoors?

They're fine outdoors (I think that's how they're mostly grown in USA) but I've found them (and most other varieties) better in a polytunnel here in the UK. I still have plenty of viable seeds from previous years if this year's crop fails.

@Freddy perhaps you could save some seeds from your biggest 'Country Taste'.

When I get back from Swanage, I'll bone up on Pam's do's and dont's and start making an Excel spreadsheet for us to fill up , I think.
I may get in a muddle and need a sit down, a cuppa :coffee: and a bit of guidance from your goodselves please,

OK. I don't think this needs to be complicated and it's just a bit of FUN.

I am happy to be the shopkeeper who handles seeds IN and OUT.

I think we need to start with a LIST of all those who wish to take part so I have put my name at the top, add your name below mine. In time, each person will need to show alongside
                      1. the name/s of the seeds they are putting IN.
                      2. the name/s of the seeds they want to take OUT
I think those participating should only be Bona Fide members of 3 months or longer who have been regularly posting.

All seeds IN should be accompanied by a suitable SAE with the required postage stamps on it for the seeds to be sent OUT..

If seed numbers are few of any one variety, I shall apportion them to those wanting them accordingly.

I have quite a few private GC addresses and I will put an asterisk against those I will need via a PM to me, similarly, I will give that person and only that person my address. They will send me their tomato seeds - separated and clearly labelled.

If anyone can divise a spreadsheet that can be used, please put it forward.

I shouldn't imagine anyone will want to be sowing seed before Christmas but I'd say business should be concluded by end of January 2014 at the latest.

                      Now open for friendly discussion,

                      Jenny namaste

That is a good suggestion Jenny, I think Freddy or Scrungee provided a similar idea earlier in the thread, but it was not taken up

The ideal with this IS everyone participating only pays postage for two envelopes, one sending the seeds in, and a SAE for getting seeds back, otherwise it would be twenty envelopes on Monday, another six on Wednesday

Also only one trusted member holds others addresses

It will be a big job to take on though DO YOU HAVE THE TIME ?

I would want to send seed in, though

                        Regards Jack McH
