All suggestions welcome, it has gotta go!! It's the remains of a very old climbing rose.

Tie a rope around the stem below the graft, pop the other end to the tow hitch of a decent car or preferably a flatbed, rev up and drop the clutch!:ideaIPB: that should see the beggar out.

    Cheers, Tony.

That might be a bit drastic Tony...

If it is dead & has to go but you can leave the roots Val I would clear the soil away a bit lower to get below the graft point then take a Silky saw or small pruning saw & saw through & chop the roots with a small axe to kill off as many side roots as possible. Then replace the soil & it should rot away .. That is what I would do anyway as wouldn't be able to get the roots out myself..

Take a 2 or 3 litre clear plastic pop bottle, and cut the bottom off. Slot it over the stump and secure it in place, taking care to keep the opening at the top accessible.

Then carry on gardening all around it. Then in spring, when it starts to sprout new shoots, spray roundup directly into the top of said cut up bottle, and repeat fortnightly as necessary until there is no sign of new growth. Then remove the bottle and use loppers to cut the stump off as close to the ground as possible, and just let nature take care of disposing of the remains.

Would I need to use Roundup on the stump before replacing the soil? or will it just rot away anyway. :)

If you chop really well around the roots so you sever as many as possible you should kill it.. I have done it before with success Val.. I was really ruthless with the axe & the saw & it worked..
