orange Daddy Long Legs/Dragonfly Thing?

Butterflies and moths are nice too and spiders, as long as they're small enough so I can't see their faces...

And a parasitic wasp?! Sounds awful!!!

 

but only the small Moths! those big hairy ones maybe kinda cool looking...but no thank you! Spiders of any size...you can have them too

i do remember reading something about Parasitic Wasps, i know they (or maybe just some of them?) lay their eggs in caterpillars...which eat the caterpillar from the inside but thats about it all i know

im afraid if its only 2cm then that cant be it...the thing we caught was more like 2 inches!

 

I haven't seen any daddy long legs at all this year. I wonder if it's something to do with the cold spring?

 

we must have got your ones so we have loads here this year, they seem larger this year too im not a fan of most creepy crawlies but Daddy long Legs are one of the worst for me...the way they bounce around on the ceiling...then onto your face!

 

one of those orange thingys flying into my face would give me nightmares.

Just been collecting some seeds outside but gave up due to having to dodge wasps and daddy long legs. I was secretly hoping that the long cold spring had finished the larvae off but it was obviously wishful thinking on my part!

I'm keeping my windows closed tonight otherwise they'll be attracted to the light being on and if any get in the bedroom, I'll be hiding under the covers all night.

 

oh i couldn't have the windows closed at night, i kinda feel a bit claustrophobic if there's no fresh air coming in...so even on the coldest of nights my window does be wide open for all the weird & wonderful critters to come pay me a visit!

 

I've just seen a bright orange/red dragon fly in my garden. It was courteous/vain enough to pause for photos. Off out now but I'll post them up later so you can see it its your fly.

i do know one thing though if your pond attracted that scary ass critter....i can never ever have a pond! ever!

 

This fellow and its brown comrade that also stopped for a break in my garden are tiny compared to the huge 'helicopter' fly that regularly hunts in my garden. Then at the other end of the scale we get a few of the almost phantom like blue damsel flies now. They're like a cobalt blue spark that is so thin its almost invisible.

Dragon flies used to really freak me out but when you give them a chance, they are actually quite likeable little creatures. Apart from being a true work of art in design, they are capable of, and routinely perform, the most amazing aerial acrobatics. I also discovered today that they can turn their heads to look around. I didn't think flies could do that, but these ones were quite canny as they looked about while resting on the bench.

 

i've only ever seen the one Dragonfly in the flesh but i must agree they are pretty amazing! we have a forest across from our house which if you go in a ways you'll come across a river, as a kid i remember suddenly coming face to face with a beautiful Dragonfly...i was mesmerised to say the least but then it moved towards me & i ran like my life depended on it!

don't get me wrong Clue i do 'like' most creepy crawlies, i find them interesting...some fascinating even!..its just most give me the heebie jeebies & quite a few frighten the life out of me
